Hi guys,

I've been doing a little digging into the snow scene in the UK, and put a little piece together talking about the current state of the snow, what type it is and whether or not to wax for your local centre. Would be good to get your thoughts on my thoughts.

Good article, very interesting. I guess no wax for the dome is better than the wrong wax. Would be a lot of scraping for only 12 hours riding.

Interesting read. Just one thing tho, Pseudomonas syringae is a bacteria not a protein. They produce the Ina proteins that help water freeze at higher than normal temperatures. Maybe I'm a pedant but thought it worth pointing out.

Wikipedia wrote:
P. syringae also produce Ina proteins which cause water to freeze at fairly high temperatures, resulting in injury to plants. Since the 1970s, P. syringae has been implicated as an atmospheric "biological ice nucleator", with airborne bacteria serving as cloud condensation nuclei. Recent evidence has suggested that the species plays a larger role than previously thought in producing rain and snow. They have also been found in the cores of hailstones, aiding in bioprecipitation.[5] These Ina proteins are also used in making artificial snow

Cheers for the heads up. Its amazing how much there is to learn about snow. In terms of duration of wax. I think the reduced rentention time is due to the abrasive nature of the snow coupled with the extruded base. Not sure what people thoughts are on rentention levels in resort. I usually go for 3-4 days of riding depending on conditions in the winter and 2-3 in the summer.

I did a lot of reading up about how often to wax for indoors, what type of wax etc.
The general consenus did seem to be around the 12 hrs, and use a harder wax.
On my new board i have noticed more edge wear, and intend to go harder on edges and all-purpose for middle 75% and lately i havent bothered with a full scrape-off - let the slope, boxes n raills do it!!
Next Tignes trip will be properly finished, and with a daily rub of Zardoz. Done this for last 4 mountain hols, and seems to work a treat.

I use standard universal wax, but then I'm riding piste boards and I'm not likely to bother de-waxing them. Now you mention it I wonder if warm temperature wax would work better, but it's not really like glacier snow, so I'm not sure about that. I'm using sintered bases, and you don't get much vert in a dome, so I've not really noticed how long it lasts there. 12 hours doesn't sound like a lot, but then I don't get 12 hours per year in a dome so I'd not notice!

never once waxed a board for indoor use, i mean how fast do you need to go on a 100 meter slope?

That's some heavy geek reading Jay. Well put together.

I'm in nicks stable though, I wont wax for indoors.

another vote against waxing for dome use here, i ride a board with an extruded base anyway, and can't see the point. I wax about twice a year, once before winter holiday, and once when i get back.

So would the Teflon stuff not be good for the dome if the moisture content is high? Better than wax even?
