I buy my gear from companies I view as truly being part of the industry, people who create products from rider experience and have passion for the sport - Burton, O'Neill, Ride, Volcom, DC etc.
I view Nike as a bunch of business execs sitting around a boardroom. Although all companies are there to create money at the end of the day, I like to believe my gear was created for the purpose of enjoyment and not profit
and oh, I think Nike's practices of child labour is disgusting and beyond despicable and as such, refuse to buy any product from them. - that too.
pointless point and pointless argument as so many brands these days are 'owned' by a larger company, who all have a board of directors and private investors/shareholders, who all want to see the balance sheet looking good.
Volcom - Gucci (as already stated)
Ride - Jarden corp
DC - Quiksilver
O'Neill - Logo int
Burton - still privately owned, but has anyone mentioned the fact that they 'own' channel island surfboards, so theoretically you could argue that 'what do Burton have to do with surfboards' and why are they getting involved?? applying the same logic demonstrated in other posts about nike getting involved in snowboarding.
personally i dont care and ill buy what i like, you can do the same, im just having my 2 pence |

Personally, I hypothesize that Nike's involvement in any and all "extreme" sports (and many other ventures for that matter) is tantamount to no more than a method of advertising and/or attempting to reach another demographic for to help top line shoe sales revenues.
Anyone think Barclays Plc is gonna be giving the Premier League a run for their money any time soon? Nope... just pushing their own wares. These massive companies have advertising budgets that can run into 9 figures per annum. What's a few million per year punting on grabbing a bit of a new market in the grand scheme? Best case, they sell more shoes and/or start up a new project that brings in +ve NPV and keeps a few more people in a job. Worst case, they pull the plug and forget it ever happened and make a claim for tax deductible expense to offset other gains. Cool as ya like... |

The choice of boot should come down to fit. I'd never buy a pair of boots (or helmet for that matter) due to brand alone. I spent two hours trying on boots before I ended up with some Salomons - couldn't even tell you the model, I just know they fit nice.
I get a good deal at Burton and so have quite a lot of Burton stuff. I still get Burton gear (cheap) even though I can get other brands for free. I just happen to really like Burton threads.
Had loads of Burton boards and liked them all, but last two boards were Signal and Bataleon, really just because I wanted to try something else. Still have a Vapor in the quiver though (and a 1968 Snurfer).
You can't really go wrong with Burton in my opinion. They have some huge riders and are well known. It's not surprising people walk in to shops and simply ask for Burton.
But there are certainly better boards for the money. It's just the age old problem of finding the right board for you. Sometimes Burton is just the easy option.
Burton also have a great warranty in place. There's no better way to turn a customer against you than not serve them well after the initial sell. Burton do the opposite and brand loyalty is well maintained because of that I'd say.
The old man has pretty much stated my viewpoint as well:
Boots & Helmet - whatever fits best (currently Northwave boots)
Boards - I've been riding Burton boards for a long time (since about a week after Tam Snowdome opened)...I don't exclusively buy Burton but knowing that the guy in charge of the business still spends 100+ days on the snow is a contributing factor, but the main reasons are more to do with the fact that I managed to snap a Burton board a few years back when it was out of warantee and entirely my own fault - two weeks later I got the next season's upgraded model free of charge, no questions asked. I also have a bunch of boards from other manufacturers but it just so happens that 3 of my 4 favourite boards are Burton (the other is a Forum)
Bindings - I love my Cartels and again I've had a pair destroyed and replaced without question, but I also love my Rome 390's.
The funny thing is that when I buy a car I tend to prefer buying those that aren't your expected brands (I've never owned a BMW/Merc), so whilst I think there's a bit of label-ism involved it's mainly down to them making good gear. I freely admit I'm a Burton advocate but it's more down to using gear that suits how I ride from a reputable manufacturer with what I feel is the industry's best warrantee / customer service policy. |

| I think one thing that nobody seems to have mentioned is that Nike Snowboarding only makes Outerwear and Boots. They don't make boards, bindings or any other hardware, so quite how you can even argue they are killing Burton is plain silly. |

CJkit posted it in another thread.
This is crazy! I had no idea that Adio was owned by K2, or that Billabong owned any of those companies.
This map is awesome. |
