We're planning to go to Switzerland snowboarding with a 5 month old. Anyone else suitably insane that can lend any advice?

| hey andy, like you i love a challenge!i took my lad to killington when he was 16 month old...and lookin back perhaps jet-lag, fever and strange surroundings didn't make for such a great time but what you gonna do sit at home until there 6 or 7. this year we went to banff and 1yr older made the world of difference, it'll be tough and don't kidd yourself but short flight and transfer are in your favor....good luck mate and remember kids don't stop you doin what you want, they just make the time you spend doing it more precious... |

A 5 month old? That's pretty nuts to be going to Switzerland with such a young child. My only advice to wish you good luck! We've booked a week at centre parc's when ours is 6 months, all I plan on doing is sleeping and pointing at squirrels.
Semi-related, I was talking to a friend who lives in Whistler and apparently they make ski schools for kids cheaper than day care to encourage young family's out there. |

dude... My Leo is 5 months old Just.. he's been camping, Up Nevis, Devils staircase, admittedly I carried him but still... kids are in the paddy fields with there mums the day after they are born in loats of countries.
Molliecoddled yoots is the route cause of all these kids thinking the world owes them something in my opinion.
Andy.. I commend your attitude and am glad to know I'm not the only one that isn't going to let a child stop them experiencing stuff but enhance the experience.
I am booked up for 3 weeks in cham climbing over next summer Leo will be 1 by then though.
@Tom... Cheaper tahn day care!!!??? man I live in the wrong place |

| we've had friends stay with a little one of 3/4 months and she was fine. I really know nothing about babies (cept fat bast*rd ate them) but i really guess it comes down to how you manage there time away and the surroundings there in while your there. |

| We took our first away for his first snow trip when he was 12m, he loved it. We're off again in January so Sideways Jnr will be 25m by then and his mums planning on getting him on some skis (i've fought bitterly against this but am losing the battle) His brother will be 6 months when we go. Although we are cheating and using Espirit. This is also my advice - pony up the extra, it's worth it IMHO. |

| Second the grandparents comment - but they came with us to Meribel and Val and spent most of the time taking our little un round the shops and feeding her ice cream. An arrangement which frankly worked for me! |

Hi,
We have plenty of people with children 5 months and younger staying in our chalet and they have a great holiday.
There are a couple of things which you need to think about when they're that young including:
- sometimes young babies struggle to clear their ears with altitude so you shouldn't stay above about 1800m, make sure you feed them or have a dummy on hand on the way up/down the mountain, shouldn't take them up on ski lifts etc.
- go with a company who provide cots, highchairs, monitors etc etc to borrow. Schlepping these plus a baby on an airoplane is not fun.
- babies (as you no doubt know!!) feel the cold more than you do. So, you need to make sure that you have proper winter clothing and that you limit their time outside.
- Make sure that you have a childcare plan. Nanny, grandparents, taking turns, whatever you choose but work it out before you go.
- Take all the nappies and formula that you'll need - the brands are different in switzerland and with everything else new it's good to keep these the same.
- Never! board with your baby in a backpack - probably doesn't need said but we still see people doing it on the slopes.
Have a great holiday - I'm sure you'll enjoy it! |
