Hi guys,
I want to set a website up for a new business i am launching and i am wondering the best way to set my website up. I have no idea about costing. I obviously want it to look as good as possible... it will need a payment system too. Any tips or pointers gratefully received.
PS - Has anyone got any opinions / experiences on the online companies that allow you (me - a layman) to design and set your own website up??

Find a webpage you like the layout of, rclick>view page source, copypasta all that into dreamweaver (obtain a trial or something) then mess about with it in the wysiwyg area changing all the text to what you want until you have a different looking template then duplicate it many times to make all different pages. Do a quick search on how to hyperlink the pages together then look for some hosting, demand has meant even good hosting has become cheaper and cheaper.
Saves you paying someone to do exactly what I just typed out. |

And the style sheets, images, etc?
Your best bet is to look for a layout and go from there, or if it's a business just pay for a professional to do it. There are so many sh1t websites out there from businesses, and if you've got a shop too, no one will buy from you if you've got a shop on a site you've put together rather poorly...
Just type free layouts or free templates into Google. |

What sort of content are you looking to have? Want lots of animation and flash on it, or a simple clean design with a list of services and a handful of images?
An easy option for payments is to route through PayPal. Offers the consumer more protection so if they've not heard of you that may make them more willing to purchase at your site too. |

Or get a Wordpress install and find a template you like with an ecommerce section, highly (and easily) customisable and cheap |

Thanks for the replies so far.
A simple clean design with quality product images and a confidence inspiring look and payment system (Paypal and Sagepay?) is the name of the game.
I am certainly heading down the route of paying for somebody to do it, as i do have money available for this, but because i am starting slowly and launching this arm of the business with a test the water attitude and because of this thinking of DIY first.
I am going to have a look into what cwj and Charlie have suggested today. |

From what I've heard from my brother who's worked in web design for at least the last 15 years, Flash is the devil and you should avoid it wherever possible.
Personally I hate Flash-based sites. Yes, they look smooth and professional but they hi-jack everything - e.g. you can't use keyboard shortcuts when you're looking at one - and they just generally annoy the crap out of me - plus they won't run on iPhones/iPads and whatever you think of iPhones etc. plenty of people have them. So if it was me getting a new site up and I wanted to make it available to as many people as possible I'd avoid Flash like the plague. Just my tuppence worth. |

The days of DIY website are long gone I'm afraid. The only real option these days is WordPress as Charlie says. Drupal or Joomla are other alternatives, but more knowledge required to get the most from them.
If you really wanted to DIY, then start learning! Basic HTML, then more advanced (to include Javascript and CSS), then a language like PHP backed by MySQL for your database. Go the LAMP route which is all free software. Domains are cheap once you can find one that's available that you like. Hosting is cheap too.
Good luck. |

Well first things first, whats the business? If your talking paypal then your selling stuff, it's an online shop but is it an web front end to an existing shop or an online only shop. Why does any of this matter, well it's just a front end to a shop then becoming an Amazon seller might just be a free way to tell if your going to get custom. Have you heard of the Amazon theory? Basically people before they buy things online people will check Amazon for reviews and price... it's the first port of call for loads of people. So what I am suggesting is rather than getting a direct point of sale website and then trying to get in the top results of a search engine try selling through Amazon and determine whether there is enough interest to take it further.
I'd still suggest buying the domain name for the shop and having a site but perhaps to begin with make it information only or buy on amazon links... talk it through with the professional you go to... choice is spend big bucks quickly and try to get the market, the Amazon business model, or grow slow and steady, the Ben and Jerrys model.
I sort of do this for a living, but not with web pages. Unfortunately there is only so much you can type on a forum using a smartphone but hopefully it's food for thought. |
