I know i'll get slated for this but here goes.
I have just developed an app for andriod phones, and wanted to share it with you all.
The reasoning behind it is i always get stung for roaming data charges when i am abroad as we always look at piste maps.
This app has currenlty 99 piste maps embedded into it, with plans to add more as requested.
we have already been asked to put more canadian maps on for resort that i didn't even know exsisted !!
here is the link:
https://market.android.com/details?id=c ... RlbWFwIl0.
If you want any adding then let us know |

I always just get the specific app for the resort I'm visiting, which has the map embedded in it so you don't have to download anything. Then you can delete it when you get home, which saves filling your phone with loads of maps you don't need.
I like the idea of having one app for all resorts buy maybe it would be better if you could just download the map(s) you want before you go. |

| Why not just get the paper version from the ticket office? I try to avoid taking my phone out at all when I'm on a mountain. |

Have to admit I've used Satski in the past (and always a paper map). The advantage of SatSki is it shows your gps location on the piste-map when completely lost (works quite well off-piste too) and logs your data (showing top speed, distance traveled, etc). And 'cos it's only using gps it doesn't touch any data, so no need to worry about any bill-costs.
If your app can do that then ace, if it can't then I can't see the advantage over a paper-map (as charlie said).
p.s. oh, and why is this in UK section? |

| Problem is with paper maps is there are folded pieces of paper, quite a pain when your sat in a bar, or on teh slope, where as most people use their phones as MP3 players, so they do carry their phones, or even use them for the camera. |

I think this is a good idea.
I've always just used paper maps in the past, but then I've usually just been in one resort area. I'll certainly look at this for next year as I'm visiting Tahoe, Mammoth and likely June Mountain in one road trip and this would save a lot of paper. (So if you don't have piste maps for these areas can you please upload them )
Just got to get a smart phone now... |

http://store.snow-forecast.com/pages/piste-maps-on-a-lens-cloth i keep being tempted to buy one of those.
The £8.99 price tag puts me off when the paper ones are free. |

thats what's put me off as well. but everytime i pull a damp and torn paper one out of my pocket i get closer to spending the cash
I know what you mean - it's certainly tempting!
My brother printed off and laminated one on A4 last year and carried it in his backpack. No good if you want speedy access though - I went with a tatty one I could fit in an accessible pocket. |

i had one for chamonix last year, i didnt use it much as a map, but the odd time i did its good not having to fold them up, you just shove it back in your pocket
actually...if many people wanted them I'll ask about getting a link to the SCUK shop with a discount

but the problem with any snow phone app is the bloody touch-screen technology on the phone. Ignoring ppl's real concerns of taking a phone onto the slope (damaging screen with a fall or getting moisture in the phone by snow or condensation in your sweaty pockets) but the frigging touch screen doesn't work with gloves which is a kinda show-stopper for something you're selling as "quick access." Personally find it just as bad (and more cold) to scrabble about removing gloves, getting out phone, messing with app, then putting gloves back on, find there's now a load of snow in the gloves so remove again and try and knock the snow out, put them back on again, etc. Tbh, I find it more annoying than a paper map (sure, it gets soggy after a while but just grab another...)
(yeah, yeah, know you can get some gloves with conductive fingers so they work on touch-screens, but 99% of snow gloves dont, so can't say it's not an issue) |
