I've bought an sold a lot from the SCUK forums directly and not through ebay. If you just apply general internet trading behaviour then personally I think you can weed out anything dodgy.
The only thing I'd consider useful personally, would possibly be some kind of rep system. I've seen it used in other places, and bought/sold to people on the basis of seeing that someone else I "know" to be trust worthy has given them positive rep after a deal to say everything went smoothly. It's not all that useful for people on a brand new account maybe, but just like ebay, it gives a quick point of reference as to someones credibility.
