Just a suggestion really, a few of the car forums i frequent have a minimum post limit that needs to be reached before a member can post for sale topics (ie. 25 posts). I personally think this would be a good idea here for the following reasons-

-Stops people joining purely to sell items, meaning they have to contribute to the community to gain the priveledge
-Lessens the chances of innocent SCUKers being ripped off by scamming sellers, a lot of the for sale items go for over £100, and thats a lot of trust to put in a new user who you don't know from adam...

thoughts?

You can already tell if someone is new or not by the amount of posts next to their name. Plus the problem is i know lots of pro riders who never use scuk but pop on once a year just to sell their last seasons stuff, this is a really good source of cheap second hand gear that would be lost.

point taken, but may put dodgy sellers off going through that hassle of community contribution to rip people off...

I can see what you mean, but the preferred method of selling for SCUK is if you put up links to your ebay sales, that means that everyone is protected.

If SCUK started putting minimum post counts for sellers and banning or allowing people to sell stuff, it would probably be opening them up to being responsible for the sales and the sellers which wouldn't be a good thing. Although SCUK offer the forum, they don't actually get involved in the sales and its up to the sellers to check stuff out, which is why ebay sales are best.

I actually like the idea.

Forums are a little unusual as they allow the seller to approach the customer, unlike ebay where the customer approaches the seller.

having a forsale section littered with adverts from people who dont use scuk benefits no one other than the seller. Some one who goes to the effort of signing up just to post an advert isnt going to be offering something to scukers before they advertise elsewhere, or giving a "special deal" They are simply using scuk as another medium to benefit themselves.

I may not have thought this through properly but just another idea on this. how about making it so that only paid members can create a topic but anyone can reply (Posts by non paid members trying to sell stuff in someone else's thread get removed by a mod maybe!). I see it as helping in two ways

1) average joe can still get cheap stuff
2) those paid members get the benefits of all those loverly discount

Two things - firstly that's getting incredibly complicated.

Secondly, not letting people new to the site post until they've stumped up their £15 would massively dissuade people from coming along!

Thirdly, I know I said two things, but I'm a mod and I can do anything!) its getting a long way from the current advice of Buyer Beware, and try to do it via ebay if possible.

I don't think it would add anything. You can see how many posts they have to show how active they are on the forum (so what), you can see whether they're a member (which means "we know who they are") and you can see how long they've been registered. Of those, the latter is probably the most useful to a buyer.

What minimum post count would you want? How easy would it be for somebody just to post a heap of nonsense posts to get up to that count?

There's people selling stuff now that have 200+ posts who I don't recognise at all from previous threads.

As the buying/selling guidelines say, we'd rather you use eBay, but if you don't, just be careful. Let common sense prevail.

@cantridepete... surely a deal benefits the buyer too if it's a good one Smile

Easy options are open for abuse. For example setting a post count limit would increase spam

It would only be a restriction to the for creating threads in the for sale section not all sections. Plus it would stop people from just registering to sell because it's free. With the subscription they also get the loverly discounts Laughing

eBay is the better option as they are set up for that purpose and paying with PayPal adds that extra security.

But it is only an idea to get people thinking of other alternatives to post counts

of course! but how many new users will go to the trouble of registering just to sell there week old bindings to the kind folk of SCUK at a "deal" price.....

Thats my point, they wont.

There only posting in the for sale section to benefit there own wares, they have no reason to offer a discount as they have no affinity to other users.

Q. How many people have complained that they've been scammed or got a bad deal recently?

A. None.

It's fine as it is.

A: Er... 2 in about 6 years.

It's not a service I want to make members only. Membership brings you discounts from our partners, not access to restricted areas on the website. People would just go "elsewhere" if this was members only. I'm 100% happy for somebody to register on SCUK and sell their whole winter wardrobe the next day.
