Anyone been to Amsterdam recently?
Twelve of us going for three days in a few weeks, so I’m looking for suggestions for decent pubs, clubs etc. |

Hill St Blues is a good bar just outside the red light district ( i know it sounds a bit like the blue oyster bar but it's actually a good place).
Melkweg is one of the bigger clubs which can be good, but it's worth checking what's on as they do put on techno nights sometimes.
For dunken snacks you will end up going to Febo at least once, this is a place where you get hot snacks from what is essentially a huge vending machine. Once you've chosen what you want it's worth feeling the window in front of your snack with the back of your hand. Pick the window that's warmest as this will be the freshest of the food that's in there (This doesn't make much sense when you read it, but when you're there all will become clear)
If you head to the red light district there's a strong chance that someone will try and run a scam on you in the street, whether it's changing money or just trying to rob you, just tell them to f*ck off. There are so many tourists they'll just move on to the next potential victim, if you start to get involved then they think they have their claws in you and won't leave you alone.
What area are you staying in? |

Dampkring
central coffee shop
front page
Barneys
Lacanna has pool tables
Amsterdam is amazing... spiritual home and all that jazz.
I can't really remember anything but the names of pot shops...!
must be good! |

I've been to the Melkweg three times, but always for gigs.
The drunken food thing for me will be Maos, Wok-To-Go or chips/mayo sauce.
We're staying in Konigsplein.
I haven't been since 2006, that's why I'm trying to get some current info. The bars I remember from then were Hard Rock Cafe, an Irish bar near the HRC, The Outback (Aussie bar in Konigsplein), Three Sisters (Konigsplein)
Could do with info on Dutch football, as we might be going to a game and we've heard we'll need photographic ID and will get breathalysed before we get into the stadium.
There's twelve of us going, and of the eight I know, no one smokes or "smokes". |

My step Dad and step brothers are Amsterdamers so i go over all the time. There are hardly any coffee shops left now since smoking was made ilegal and almost all the red light district has been shut down and given over to new designers to turn into Boutiques and art galleries. The old Amsterdam stereotypes dont exist anymore. |

It was my Mrs who suggested Amsterdam, so I've kinda been made tour guide, hence my plea for help. |

@ Nick I thought that wasn't happening until the end of this year?
I know the government have decided to stop the pot and prosie tourists just didn't think it was happening so soon. Rubbish!
I was also under the impression that it was still 'legal' for locals? |

| The coffe shops have been dissapearing for the last three years, there are very few left now and you're only allowed to smoke pure weed, no tabacco allowed because of the EU smoking ban. The red light is still there but its about half the size it was and dissapering fast too. Yeah it was the new major who decided they didn't want their city to be famous for drugs and hookers anymore so passed loads of new laws and started to reposes the property the brothels were in. Smoking is still legal but to be honest the dutch never go to coffee shops anyway it was purely a tourist thing. My step brothers been there for 36 years and never stepped foot in one. |
