The coffe shops have been dissapearing for the last three years, there are very few left now and you're only allowed to smoke pure weed, no tabacco allowed because of the EU smoking ban. The red light is still there but its about half the size it was and dissapering fast too. Yeah it was the new major who decided they didn't want their city to be famous for drugs and hookers anymore so passed loads of new laws and started to reposes the property the brothels were in. Smoking is still legal but to be honest the dutch never go to coffee shops anyway it was purely a tourist thing. My step brothers been there for 36 years and never stepped foot in one.
I'd be interested to know when this happened - I was there last at the end of July this year and there were plenty of coffee shops doing a good trade. The comment about tobacco is also wrong as every shop we went into had absolutely no issue with this.
The legislation that people are talking about above is to ban all smoke with >15% THC content...personally I can see this being very difficult to enforce, and when I last looked at the Dutch Govt website there was no mention of the legislation apart from a few vague comments (I'm keeping an eye out as I'll definitely be going for one last trip if they ever do set a date)
Rizla has named some very good coffee shops there - I'd also add Grey Area and Dutch Flowers to that list, both very good. If it's a really mixed bunch there's also the Red Light Bar as they serve beer, have a pool table and smoke, but it's a bit "English on holiday for my taste"
Whatever anyone says, avoid the Grasshopper completely - overpriced beer, overpriced weed, crap tourist spot. |

Yeah there are plenty of Coffee shops still there but less than a quarter of the amount there used to be. You're not allowed to smoke tobacco in any public indoor place, coffee shop, bar, restaurant, makes it kinda hard to smoke a joint, unless the places you went to just aren't enforcing the EU law....which would be kinda strange since the council are trying anything they can do stop the trade completely. Someone even invented a bag you smoke your joint in and blow the smoke into to try and get round it. Just like in Greece they are allowed to have designated smoking areas but these have to be seperate and no drinks or food can be served, its illegal to have a whole shop where smoking is allowed, and if they did they wouldn't be allowed to serve anything. This law came in in 2008
As i said my brothers are from there and live there, its debated all the time. |

| Heard today that it is the skunk varieties that they are banning, but there are fears that it will just be driven underground so its still no where near being passed. |

I last went in 2007 and all the coffee shops were saying that the party is going to be over soon, bit of a shame as there's only so many art galleries you can go to without the option of whoring and scoring...
TBF prague or somewhere a bit eastern european will probs take over as the "smoke some stink and nail some pink" capital of europe soon
@ sam, if you're going to amsterdam as a drinking holiday, that will be expensive! |

If we were to go into one of the smoke shops, how easy is it to get disco biscuits and/or South American talc or is that a no-no.
We're going to Alkmaar for a day, so any info on decent bars there would be good.
@ Liggins...It'll be all drinking, only interupted by some of the above if we can get it. The guy who I was with in Hinterglemm has been off the drink since then on medical advice, but he's now got the all-clear and the day we fly out will be the first time he's had a drink since Feb. |

walk round the edge of the red light district and hang about being british. It wont be long before everything illegal finds you. Top of the road near the irish bars was rife with dealers when i was there.
Dont ask in coffee shops. They really take huge offence |
