Okay, some of you may remember, some of you may not, but in the "recent forum posts" list on the right of most pages, SCUK used to surface topics from the SCUK Inn when someone posted in them.

Mr Dunx one day decided to stop the SCUK Inn posts being seen in this list as it was stopping genuine topics from being surfaced, there were too many posts (which were strange ramblings like the singles thread etc).

I feel like it's now time to do the same with the "For Sale" topics, I have nothing against people trying to sell gear on the site, but it feels like the "recent posts" list is being choked by topics offering goods for sale rather than advice or genuine questions about the sport.

Thoughts, or has this topic already been hidden from the homepage by lots of things for sale?

haha it's difficult one pocket.

the FS stuff tends to be seasonal. it's just unfortunate that it'll happen at this time of the year when new browsers of the forum may be looking for advice, etc.

i don't know what the answer is. <-doesn't help you at all, does it? Laughing

It is indeed a tough proposition and not one which should be judged lightly. You are right, there will be a certain seasonal trend to this, but if that coincides with when people are looking for advice, you should surely put newcomers seeking help and advice first.

After all, is that not the core purpose of the site?

Could the answer lie in a compromise?

Stop FS topics coming up on the community list as it does at present, but make a separate smaller list underneath that is purely dedicated to FS and Wanted topics.

That way, we don't get the important snowboarding discussion bit being polluted with FS topics but at the same time people can still try and sell their stuff and still get onto 'The Front Page' so to speak.

But newbeees come on looking for cheap gear too , and sometimes its hard for them to navigate around a new forum , so may miss out on a bargain ... catch 22

You could say the same about topics on 'Which Board' 'What Bindings' or 'Bansko' Laughing Laughing Laughing

I guess the real answer is going to be SCUK2.0, but personally I'd rather not see the FS's.

I'm very lazy and only bother to look at the Recent Posts section. If there is nothing interesting on there then I close the site. And at the moment the interesting stuff is being rapidly bumped off by the FS's.

you could, but which this, or what that type threads are asking for advice, exactly what the forum is for, Bansko on the other hand should have an FS in front of it Wink

WFM, if SCUK took a commission from all sales, I'd agree, but for the most part I think newbies come here as SCUK is advertised as a portal for advice on snowboarding, not as a place to come pick up cheap gear.

I do like the idea of the 'FS' being in a separate section, it could replace the 'Users Online' which I see as pointless Yes

tbh I never even realised the 'Recent Forum Posts' section was there till I saw this thread. I think I probably just assumed it was more advertising and ignored it like I do all ads on websites - now I know it's there I may use it more Smile

I think a separate FS list could be good as then it'll solve the problem and still give people good exposure for the stuff they're trying to shift.

I don't think that it would necessarily benefit many people taking the FS stuff out of that list. I don't think many noobs to the forum look at that list. I know that I very rarely do (though obviously I'm not a noob).

As I recall (and this is through recanted stories cos I wasn't around when it happened|) but the SCUK Inn stories were removed from the list because there were some fairly choice threads which were making SCUK look bad with it plastered on each page - was there an issue with search engines finding them? I dunno, but I'm fairly sure that it wasn't just the fact that Inn threads were burying other ones.

If I was a noob to this forum, I would mostly likely come to snowboardclub.co.uk, click on the forum button which will give me the list of forums available, then have a look from there - I don't think the recent threads list makes a difference. In fact if the list was replaced with another advert that brought more money in for SCUK maybe that would be of more use.

I think it needs it's own section.... good idea on replacing the users online, I can't see what purpose the users online serves really

The FS posts do clog up the recent post feeds a bit but I think having a feed of FS stuff is important, I check it sometimes, it's good to see some interesting stuff that comes up occasionally without having to enter the forum menu..... and I use it to sell stuff too, as lots of us do, it's certainly helped me shift stuff.

I've bought things recently because I've been tempted in seeing listings in the 'recent forum posts' box.

Na, leave it as it is, or maybe double it to the last 20 posts instead of 10. I use it a lot as a guide to see if there's much happening.
