So, a winge, a moan and some advice needed.
Had a run to skeg and back on Friday, all fine. Seemed ok.
Got back in car Sunday at my girlfriends, no power whiney as feck.
Looked under bonnet, no coolant?!
Phoned AA in case, diagnosed a Cracked Radiator Housing.
Took it to Halfords (AA guy said it'd be fine to drive a few miles).
Apparantly the crack has leaked coolant into the clutch, head gasket has gone.
Plus the roll bars have got excessive play.
Halfords price just to get on the road - £1500. To fix it all, £2500.
I honestly feel like crying right now, had the windows done twice in a week last month, work is going sh1t (and I need a car for work).
Breakdown repair cover from the AA will only cover £500 (if at all as they'll try to get out of it).
Only had it 5 months, spoke to the dealer yesterday and he denied any liability (no warrantly as second hand buy).
Can't afford the money to fix it, only worth £1300!
Do I, try and sell it for a bit (considering my mum brought it and I'm paying her back) and grab a scrapper.
Cry
Second hand engine
I don't know what to do!! |

Going to Halfords was your first mistake.
What car is it?
If I were you I'd take it to another garage, a reputable privately owned one. Where abouts in Notts are you?
There's no way in hell it's going to cost £1,500 to throw a new rad in, coolant, have the head skimmed and ported, new gasket set and bolts, new ARB bushes and any other ancillaries and labour charge.
If it makes you feel any better it costs me ~£600 just to have a full cambelt change on my Clio. |

Sorry, that was meant to read £1300!
Ford Focus 1.8. W Reg.
Just went to Halfords as it was close by and I was hoping that AA Breakdown Cover (will pay £500 towards) would cover it anjd they deal with them all the time. Wasn't expecting to be *quite* that bad!
Talking to mates of mates etc, looking at cost of second hand engine. |

Second hand engine could end up costing quite a bit depending on what warantee you want with it...
and dude, it is never okay for a man to cry unless he has just witnessed his dog die carrying out a heroic act! |

Sounds like you're trying to justify your own actions to be honest |

Walk away from halfords - that is a mickey mouse price.
Here is an example of the prices of the parts for your model of car ...
From http://www.eurocarparts.com/
Rollbars - you mean anti-rollbars which are £24.00
Radiator is £74.40 (if it's the thermastat housing it's £94)
Clutch is £80 to £150
Head bolts are £14 to £25
They didn't have a price for a headgasket - but can't be more than £20 ..
Did Halfords say if they thought the block was cracked?
I make that no more 300ish for the parts - I'm sure you can find a garage to do that level of work for £300 - £400 |

Craig, do yourself a favour, post up exactly what is wrong/diagnosed.
A head gasket job(at a real garage, not Halfords) is a couple hundred at the most. This will include parts/labour.
Is the radiator housing actually the thermostat housing?
Murano3 has the right idea. |

remember to factor in labour charges in your calculation, clutch alone will be a few hunded in labour! |

Sorry, I did mean Thermostat Housing. Its been one of *those* days.
(Hell, I've decided I hate September).
My mum has picked up the keys and they've not given her any paperwork. As soon as I have it written down what's wrong I will
The dealer is avoiding my calls, trying to claim not fit for purpose unde.r 79 sale if good act. |

Just need to shop around, clutch change on my GTR with the gearbox out was only £200 inc VAT, cambelt the same. A clutch on the Front wheel drive car should take no more than 2 hours!.
Avoid main dealers and look for a 'local' garage. There is a system called Autodata that most garages use to estimate a job, so check the labour charge up front and get them to check autodata .. instead of a guesstimate ...
(for interest a little bit of coolant shouldn't have caused permanent damage to the clutch .. it will dry off !) |

Also, why not look up one of the many car forums - I found a ford focus one .. http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums/fo ... ocus-club/
Ask on there, they maybe able to recommend a local garage or give you an idea of cost.
Plus a whole engine for a focus is £200 delivered on Ebay!!! .. ok you need to add labour to fit .. again not that much! |

| With regards the 'dealer' - have a word with Citizens Advice .. I'm sure you have upto 6 months on a warranty! |
