I've just seen I've been paying for it so downloaded a letter from the Nat West web site, but is there anything in these typs of letter they try and trip you up on?

I have a real claim, but just dont want to mess it up and not get the money as I would guess they would find anyway not to pay out.

I went through a solicitor - PPI Claimline they're called.
They've been alright, but they take like 25% comission off the money you get from the bank - bit of a rip off really. Although I did get back everything I paid.
I didn't realise you can do it yourself - not until it was too late anyways.

I don't think there'd be much they can trip you up on. Basically, the banks put up a massive fight when all these claims first came about like a year ago and said they weren't going to investigate or pay out. It all went to court and the court ruled that all claims need to be investigated and monies paid back if it was mis-sold. if they don't pay out, people can still go to the financial ombudsman for an independant investigation so I don't think they'd try and be sneeky after all that.

I'd just write down exactly what happened... should take like 2 months for them to look into it and make an offer.

They shouldn't be putting anything into their letters to trip you up, the Financial Services Authority would slap them silly if they did and hand out a massive fine.

Because it's such a big thing at the mo they very probably have a project team just for reviewing these cases, that team would have to report to the FSA so wouldn't risk trying to avoid a valid claim.

May be worth a quick read on the moneysavingexpert forum for any tips on filling the letters in?

I was thinking that as I'm a contractor and I can go a couple of weeks between jobs they could come back say I needed it as it was sold for that reason, even though I never take anything like that out with any company.

I'll have a look at moneysavingexpert later.

It rarely covered self employed people, certainly sounds like you'd have a fairly valid claim Smile

It was my understanding from the court ruling that the banks are obligated to go through their own records and offer to repay anyone who was mis-sold PPI. You shouldn't actually have to claim at all, they should do it for you. However, I'm sure that's not actually very likely to happen.

If you're a contractor then are you self-employed? If so, it was 100% mis-sold as it is impossible to claim on a PPI policy if you're self-employed. That was one of the main issues that the court looked at.

I put a claim in through one of them claim companies maybe 18-months ago when the banks were still denying they did anything wrong - chased it up a couple of times through them, but they said the banks were waiting for a Judicial review before paying anything out. Since then the decision's gone against the banks and they've admitted full liability.

Since then my bank paid out a hefty amount straight into my bank account, and I'm still waiting for the claim company to contact me for their cut - if they know about it! Well, I'm in no rush to contact them... but it should be very straight forward and you should get your money without any problems.

Cool. I've filled out Nat West's own letter/questionair they have on their web site, but need to find the paperwork at home with dates etc, which I know no idea where is it.

Fingers crossed this will give me some cash for winter.

If they're ordered to do something by the FSA they will certainly do it. FSA rule with an iron fist and if they don't comply could remove their authorisations to sell. I was a financial compliance reviewer for 8 years and had many a run in over the most minor of things with advisers because of them.

Lez if you call them they should give you all the relevant dates if you're struggling to hunt down the paperwork

Can't you check your bank statements online..? I looked up mine that way (I know you can look-up up to 10 years worth of statements online with Lloyds – NatWest might be similar?)

There is an option on the letter just to put Dont know, which if I feel lazy I'll let them look it up.
