Hi there,

This one is for the computer techies out there. My sons school has just up graded their computers and sold there old ones to the parents (£20 each bargin) they are dell optiplex gx60 (pentium 4 2.8ghz cpu, 2gb ram 80gb harddrive).
I was wondering if anyone had a graphics card that I could buy/have? the only problem is that the motherboard only has pci slots not pcie, so graphics cards are a bit thin on the ground as they all seem to be pcie/pci express which is to "new" for these old computers. I only need one as video playback isn't too great and to possibly play a few old pc games that I have lying about. If you could help out that would be great

cheers Col

Seems mental they only have PCI slots. Do the mobo come with onboard graphics? Is there no AGP slot as well as the PCI's??

There's an intel extreme gpu onboard but its crap. They only put pci in this one later models started to get 1 pcie and agp, which is strange as when these computers were new agp and pcie was in use.

Yeah, really weird that one. Do you know the board model? Some had a Comm port back in the day and an AGP card could be modded to work on. I've never heard of a board without any PCI-E OR AGP, it's normally one or the other, even on a board with VGA on board.
I've built over 300 PC's and never come across this. That's Dell for you though.

is it a full sized desktop or SFF(small form factor) ? AGP are rarely on any new pcs, and finding a decent card for a SFF at a good price is crazy.

what spec of card are you wanting?

It's not a new machine so it could be AGP. If it's P4 then it fits in with the AGP/ PCI-e switch over. I rekon it will be SFF if it's got onboard VGA, they didn't really do full sixed ATX boards for corporate PC's, all about saving space and cost.

didn't old mobos sometimes remove/consume the agp slot when they had on-board gfx? isn't there a model number we can work with?

tbh, pci is v v old, we're talking 4meg graphics cards (most today are 512meg to 1024meg) - what are you expecting to get from a graphics card which is better than the on-board? you, sure as sh1t, can't play any 3d games either way... possibly something like Day of the Tentacle or other SCUMM games, but probably the limit.

The gx260 came in three sizes as far as I remember, sff, mid and full size tower.

The sff only takes express cards which is a pain in the ass, the other two have agp and pci.
