While cycling is good for leg strength, etc...and from unfit you can do it for longer....running is a far better way to build leg strength, stamina and also burn calories. Swimming again is ok, for general strength etc, but again not as efficient an exercise for building stamina and strength. Both cycling and swimming have the bonus, however, of being non impact and therefore you are less likely to do yourself a mischeif.

And if you can stomach it, hill reps are the best of the lot once you have built a base of running up and can run comfortably for 45 minutes. By hill reps I mean sets of 30-45 seconds hard uphill, jog back recover inbetween, 3 mins rest every 4 reps. Hurts like hell, but is extremely effective for building strength in your glutes, thighs and calfs.

It's all relative though, mixing it up is the best for all round fitness with running, swimming, cycling, gym, weights, etc.

As for me I am in the gym 4 times a week at the moment doing a mix of weights, cross trainer, running and rowing.

I would disagree with your comment about swimming not being as efficient for building strength and stamina. I would actually argue that if you vary what stroke you do that swimming is far more efficient for building both strenghth and stamina than just general running - I think you can achieve a lot more in a hard 30 minutes session in the pool than 30 minutes running and when you time is seriously constrained by your job this is quite important.

Aside from that I personally hate running - I agree with your point on hill reps though. I think my hate stems back to pre-season football training many years back when we had to run up and down sand dunes for an hour. A sure way to make you vomit!

Agree with you on mixing it up as well - variety means you challenge different muscle groups and keeps you interested.

Regardless if you 'need' to be fit or not, I'm telling myself you do as it's a damn good excuse to get off me arse and go do something! Plus as with any activity, fitness can never hurt! Plus I went for a run yesterday and nearly died, not a great sign...

I Plan to ramp up the fridge sessions, jogging, cycling, usual conditioning exerxises and I'm also in the middle of making a sweet indo style board to use whilst watching whatever rubbish is on the box in the evening as I see it as a cheap and convenient way to condition your legs/core

Bit of variety for me, mainly gyming (including squatting and deadlifting) and kickboxing (which includes all sorts of crazy leg conditioning.) I supliment that with running and cycling, oh and snowboarding at the dome!!!

As for your quote Kieren24 of calf raises being pointless... "I wouldn't bother with calf raises... the most ridiculous and pointless exercise (apart from the shake weight) I can think of", I have to ask whats wrong with the shake weight? For those not familiar see the link!

Seriously tho, anything is better than nothing, people can argue about what is best but within reason, if you do what you like you're more likely to keep it up and not just jack it in like the stampede of buffers that hit the gym every January and quit by February or March (because they are obviously buff enough by then!)

haha good luck with that I increase smoking to about 30 cigarettes a day after my first season!

The amount of karate training I've been doing, particular stance training, should be leaving me with superfit leg muscles,.. I'm hoping! So this year's riding should be a doddle! Wink

I find squatting weights is quickest for building quad, hamstring and core strength. I'd throw in some step ups and start on your weak leg since one will always be stronger than the other.

Rock climbing is great for getting good all over conditioning and muscle endurance and far less boring that going to the gym. I do a lot of cycling too but you'll spend about 25% of your time free wheeling so won't burn the same calories as running or swimming unless you're nailing it on a flat course. That said it's easy to go out and cycle for 3hrs but not so easy to do that kind of time running or in the pool. If you want to burn the most calories in a limited time I would learn how to skip.

I ride a fixed wheel bike with no brakes, that keeps you on your toes! Good for the legs too, Since riding it over a normal bike to work, my legs ar definatly stronger, resisting against the bike to slow down was hard at first but after about a year now it's easy!

Mountain biking is good, Especially downhill, gives you good core strength, Makes your legs burn like snowboarding too after a long run!

I drink, smoke and ride freestyle at the Snow Centre every week, no better training than snowboarding in my opinion, I'd rather spend my money there than a gym. My legs used to be like jelly the first few times i went but now it's alright the next day!

1st night of a new gym membership last night.
Jesus.......
i do wanna get fit though, I ride quite an aggressive board and to get the best out of it you do need to push.. was finding last season, after lunchtime, my legs just couldn't 'dig in' and i spent more time skidding on my arse than carving a majestic turn with a plume of white smoke like snow from my tail..... ahem, well, you get my drift. so concentrating on legs and stamina
