i dont live that way so im guessing it was 63 in a 50 zone. but whats wrong with 3 pounds? is it 3 pounds of flesh, a bit like in shakespears merchant of venice or 3 pounds of burgers?

Sad not good.. I'm told the speed awareness course is quite good though or at least the actual course bit of it I've got no information on the sandwiches.

I'm on a 2 week wait myself spotted the van on a bridge on the M40 too late. It was my own fault shouldn't have been speeding however on a bone straight road it does make me wonder if its all really about safety and not just cash generation.

Genuinely one place you shouldn't speed, that corner kills folk all the time. All you need to do is look up at the bridge and see all the bunches of flowers. Lanes narrow after it too which us why it's a 50

See, I find that to be the problem nowadays. They put up so many seemingly pointlessly low speed limits all over the place so you can't tell when you actually do need to be obeying them.

Yes, yes, I know you shouldn't speed and you should be obeying all the signs on the road at all times, but the majority of speed limits, and specifically the motorway ones, were set based upon cars manufactured nearly 50 years ago when brakes were absolutely nowhere near as efficient as they are nowadays. 80 is usually perfectly safe on a motorway and tbh what difference is there going to be if you have an accident at 80 instead of 70?

Also, how often are you going through roadworks where the limit is 50mph because you have a contraflow in operation? Yet you can do 60 on a single track country road with nothing separating you from the oncoming traffic. Doesn't make any sense.

If they set sensible speed limits then people would obey them more often and if they saw a 50mph limit, such as the above, then they'd know that they actually do need to slow down for it.

Rant over...

Me to 50 in a 40 between brackley and buckingham. only realised that I had been caught when I saw the copper in the middle of the road. To make matters worse it was two community officers and not traffic that did me.

Still waiting to find out whether I am eligible for the course. That's taken two weeks. You gotta love Thames Valley for the speed and efficiency

I took the course after picking up three tickets in one week a few years back. The course was £60 then and that didn't include any sandwiches. The day consisted of identifying the reasons why we speed, speed limit awarness for a particular road and numerous hazard identification/crash scene videos/pics. There was no exam at the end but had verbal questions thrown at us throughout. All in all it was a lame experience as I didn't really learn much and don't feel like i'm any less likely to speed.

The course was more of a formality where they teach you to suck eggs, one guy on my table drove fire engines for a living and had passed an advanced driving test.. Oh and half the group were foreigners who wouldn't ask or answer any questions yet still passed??

i took a good look at the spot i was caught today.
i aint excusing myself at all, there are plenty of signs saying its 50, but its one of those spots that could so easily benefit from a variable speed limit.
during the week its difficult to pass 40mph on that section of the M60. its chocka with traffic and has a difficult junction slip road onto it.
weekends and evenings though its as empty a an empty thing yet the limit is still lower than it would be on a single carriageway country lane.

its a pity we dont go for variable speed limits in this country. it would still enforce speeds suitable for the road conditions but would take into account those actual conditions.

The reason that it's fixed slow there is because a car spun with 4 people in and they were all killed when a guy came round the corner after. Was the middle of the night and all 5 died.

I rarely speed, even on the motorway. I'm a good driver but there are too many idiots on the road

http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/4 ... C.doc.html

thats quite interesting reading.

odd though to see the note that says "Greater Manchester Police does not record the speed that the vehicle was travelling at the time of the accident"

i would have thought that an area where Speed limits where impossed to save lives that the speed at the time of the accident would have been quite important.
