Ok so im about to setup my own business after umming and rring for a few months now I've decided to go for it. im starting my own mobile locksmithing company and im a bit stuck for ideas for naming it. so far i came up with a few but none really stick out other than 'Armour Locks'. A couple of reasons i chose , 1 it begins with A so will be one of the first in the phone book, 2 it sounds good i.e. armour = secure, safe etc and 3 being a geek i used to be in an armoured squadron in the army. My only drama is there is a company in devon with the same name, what are the legal issues with that? I won't be poaching business off them as im in oxfordshire but just want to check.

Anyway if you have read all that what im asking you kind, clever, witty people is can anyone think of another name? I toyed with Lock Stock and Barrel but there are a few with that so its a no go. im after something that comes across professional with maybe a bit of humour but not a complete piss take

edit: also being able to brand it is very important as if it works out over got a few people who are willing to start up else where using my name so can't be area related i.e. burford locks or anything like that

i think being early in the phonebook is a lot less important than it used to be. i don't even know where our phone book is. Also armourlocks.co.uk is already taken as a domain name.

most of the people i know would check the net first and if i had locked myself out and was in Burford i would be googling for "burford Locksmith" on my phone.

its always nice to pick a name for a business yourself but often circumstances force the name on you. friends of mine have a company called Flax. named simply because it was the only 4 digit domain name they could find.

http://locallocksmith.co.uk/ is available, and that doesnt tie you down to an area.

As far as I'm aware, you can't use the same name as another company who operates in the same industry. Even though you wouldn't be taking business off them, as you operate in the same arena there is a strong risk of a presumed association between the two businesses, if the other company did something wrong, say they helped burglar to break into some houses in some kind of giant fraud scam and it was all over teh news, your reputation would suffer too, and they would almost certainly object to it on the same basis in case you did something wrong.

A bit of an extreme example I know, but that's the logic behind it!

Do you only do the locks, or the complete door furniture?

If so you could call it

"Lockers and Knockers"

Honestly i just wanted to say knockers.

mm knockers

This can't be true.

It is true in terms of limited companies in that you can't register at companies house with the same name as another company. If you're just using a trading name then it's best not to have the same one as anyone local so you at least avoid confusion.

Its not. You can apply to have your name so nobody can do this, but its not just a given.
