Hey all,

Just a vent about FLYBE......

Ive flown with flybe before via an agent when going snowboarding and every time they have accepted my snowboard for a charge of £30 with no problems..

So this time I decided to book the flights myself.. Mid way through the booking process it informs me that if I have ski equipment that I need to ring customer services within 24hrs to guarantee my equipment on the flight.

So I complete the booking and ring customer services to book my board on... Just to be told that snowboards arnt guaranteed transit and that I shall need to arrive at the airport and if they can fit my board on they shall at a cost of £30 EACH WAY!!!!

I then get told by customer services that if I had skis they can be guaranteed and if they cannot fit them on the flight I could get a refund...

So that's just brilliant Im flying to the Alps with the risk that I may not be able to take my snowboard with me !!!! and I can't get a refund on my flight.. Cheers Flybe thanks a lot!!!!!

That's pretty much standard. I've never had a problem though and you never should if you get to check in early.

Hate to say it... but that is a pretty standard each way charge (usually around £25-£35 depending on the carrier) and pretty standard T&Cs for most the budget airlines.

when weve flown with them before via neilson its only cost us £30 total !!! and non of this showing up at the airport without guaranteed passage for the snowboards.

Just more annoyed they can guarantee passage for ski's but not snowboards

having looked at bmibaby, easyjet the boards can be booked on in advanced..

We did ask about showing up early to the airport to guarantee carriage for the boards but were told that is doesnt make any difference, its not done on first -come-first served basis.

Read the small print. Easyjet use the phrase "subject to available space" to cover themselves, even for pre-booked items. With Neilsons, you're booking an entire package, so that is not a like for like comparison with a budget airline.

You're worrying about nothing.

Flybe are just covering themelves by saying turning up first doesn't guarentee you'll get your board on. However if you're that worried about it turn up relatively early anyway.

Yeah it's just Flybe covering their backside. Pretty standard stuff to be honest, generally if you go through a tour operator, things come as a pre-booked/ pre-arranged package so they have their own discounts with the airline and can negotiate things significantly cheaper. Hence why it's sometimes more pricey to book the extras yourself.

For example we've booked with Virgin this year and need an internal flight from Newcastle to Heathrow with BA. Normally that would cost £129 + extra for our boards but Virgin have booked it for us for £78 with free board carriage as it's part of a total package.

The weight thing may be an issue if you've not booked through an operator as well - Crystal gave a weight allowance of 5kg for a board on Jet2 flights this year. My snowboard bag actually weighed 18kg but the baggage staff didn't give a monkeys - no problems wither way. However at Salzburg, there were 4 skiers in the queue in front who had booked off their own backs and they got pulled up for being over allowance..

The others have pretty much covered it - turn up early and you should be ok. If there is a problem, if you've got good travel insurance that would cover the cost of transporting your boards separately + hire for the days you are missing your stuff.

Frustrating though, these hidden things. Flybe aren't the worst by any means - Ryanair definitely win for that!

i thing the thing that grates the most is that flyers taking ski's can get their flight refunded if the ski's cannot be taken yet this is not the case with flyers who take snowboards

Easyjet have bumped their board carriage for 2011-2012 from £36 to £50 return...but you do get 32kg for your boardbag.

I reckon a pair of skis and bindings weigh more than a snowboard and bindings. I shouldn't worry though. Next time get the train and take two boards.

What do companies like BA charge these days? Is that just the same sort of concept of making you pay double?

BA don't charge if you only take your ski/board bag as your only bag.
