The trouble is they can only estimate the take off weight of the plan. I've seen people on here complaining that the airlines don't give you enough baggage allowance when I've rarely even managed to get my board bag with everything in it much past 16Kg. The airline has to try and estimate how many passengers travel relatively light like me and how many will turn with almost twice as much luggage.
Of course take off weight is also affected by other factors such as if you're going to be punching head winds they'll need to load more fuel which means less allowance for luggage.
Then you have to factor in the fact that it's not just a question of weight but also space. I suspect they are more lenient on people with skis as while they may weigh more it's a lot easier to squeeze a long thing ski bag into a spare space in the hold than a rather wider board bag.
It's not such an easy calculation after all and it's no surprise that some times they get it wrong. I'd rather get to my holiday without my kit than find myself in the situation where they've overbooked passengers and everyone actually turns up for the flight and some of you miss part of your holiday waiting for a later flight!
I totally agree with you they should have made more effort to get your bags to you once you were on holiday. It's not always as simple as chucking them on the next flight but I'd certainly expect them within 48 hours. |

Jdavies1976; I'm sure I did simplify my comments on working out what luggage the aircraft can take. But speaking to the baggage company, Jet 2 are doing this every single week. On my flights there were over 25 bags left each way, and on an earlier flight to my arrival in Chambery, over 70 were left behind in the UK.
Are you seriously suggesting that working out how much baggage the plane can take is that complex that they would stuff it up by 25 or even 70 bags/skis/boards???
The baggage co at the airport was saying that they wish they never accepted the Jet2 contract! |

| That level on a regular basis would seem to be taking the piss! No doubt next they'll try and tell you they can't be sure what kind of plane it is until the last minute so they sell baggage space assuming it's an A380 only to find out the day before it's a tiny biplane which can only accommodate the pilot plus one passenger! |

This is the reason I don't mind paying slightly more to fly with BA / Swiss air, have always had excellent service and a nice bacon sandwich + can of coke in the morning.
If it's an early morning flight and you're nice they sometimes let you the nice lounge also...
If in doubt - London city airport. You won't get better service anywhere else... unless you have a black Amex card |
