As the title really. I want a tablet. It's not a need.
I dont want to make this a pros and cons debate against laptops. I have a decent laptop and also want a tablet.
Does anyone know what's best? Value for money? iPad? Play book?
I'm not against spending the 600 quid but if there's one that does it all for less I'd like to know |

iPad... aren't they about £300...
I wasn't sold on them but my Mrs has one and uses it all the time. It's slick, great for internetting little bits and pieces and great for long journeys... plus with the new icloud thing happening at the end of this year it's all going to be smoooooth. |

I have an iPad through work, but if I didn't have it for free I personally wouldn't buy one.
It looks nice enough and is pretty simplistic in terms of usability, but it has too many Apple quirks for me, including:
- Lots of websites I try to look at don't work, including forum sites where it doesn't recognise the input box so you cant contribute
- No Flash
- Doesn't play movies on Facebook (no flash)
- Only plays 1 specific video format and iTunes doesn't convert it for you (you need third party software for that)
- It crashes on me a lot, particularly in Safari
- It drops the wireless connection if you hold it too close to your body (i.e sitting it on my knee)
- When wireless drops it often prompts to input the password again and doesn't accept meaning the device needs rebooted
And thats just off the top of my head.
The hardware, if I'm being fair is pretty good. The screen is sharp and great for video (once you painstakingly convert it yourself) and the battery seems to last a pretty decent length of time for what it does.
Unfortunately and most unlike Apple, I think the OS is pretty poor for what i'm looking to do with it.
If I were buying one for myself, I'd definitely be going Android, but it horses for courses. I'm an IT nut so I like that theres more freedom with Android and I'm willing to accept its many flaws because it'll suit what I want to do with the device more.
If i was recommending one for my folks on the other hand, given what they'd do with it, I'd look past my issues with the iPad and recommend that for them for its simplicity.
Depends what you're after I guess. |

i've got an ipad and it seems at the moment that more and more video's are not playing. Its only got one function for me and thats browsing facebook and watching video's, if i cant do that its useless.
I wont be buying the next generation until its sorted out. At the moment its basically a big ipod! |

I personally have an iPad2 and I don't have any of the issues listed above maybe I don't visit the same dodgy websites the dodgy websites I visit are fine
I also don't seem to encounter the issue with Facebook videos, strange??? I wonder if its related to the video format the user has used?
If you do go for an iPad and you want to use it for movies, TV shows, etc I'd recomend getting the biggest capacity you can feasibly afford, oh and get the 3G one as you then have GPS and when you are somewhere without free wifi you're not stuck (on a related note you can get a t-mobile PAYG micro sim put £10 on it once and they'll give you 12 months of free internet )
Other tablets to consider would be the forthcoming Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" (won't be any cheaper than an Ipad but will likely have Flash if you 'need' that)
Also the Motorola Xoom which is just out with Android Honeycombe, flash and a slightly bigger screen than the iPad.
This concludes the voting for Accrington |

Mine would be more for web browsing, watching videos and films while away, playing football manager and reading books.
Think I'm going to have a play with some this weekend and decide. |

Id advise staying clear of UMPC's - which come under the 'tablet' umbrella.
That said, im currently using a Sony Vaio UX280p and its fantastic. But for me, its more than just a toy as ill be using it as my main traveling computer. |

sh1t all over an iSad
You can use a microSd card and increase the memory if you want, you have Hdmi socket. You can see flash in website etc etc etc
iPads are for people who don't really know what they're doing or even care about not knowing |

| Can anybody tell me why it's better not up support Flash on a tablet, than to support it? I wonder why apple think it's better to not support it on their iPads? |

I seem to remember the reason they didn't support Flash was because it drained the battery too much (the processing power drain was very large to process the Flash codec) or something like that.
Edit: actually found Apple's official statement:
