Ok, so some of you may have noticed that I've put my bike up for sale.
I therefore need to buy a car and I know there are a few on here who know a bit about cars, so it would be great if I could get some advice.
I can only really afford up to around £800 due to the fact that my no claims has expired (I haven't had a car for a few years now) so the insurance is likely to be about the same amount.
My only requirements are that it must be economical, reliable and cheap to insure - oh and I must be able to fit my board in it
I've been looking at Skoda Fabia, Pug 306, and VW Polo so far so any opinions/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys, |

Ford Focus would be another good car to look at and you should be able to find one for around £800.
Are you just looking at smaller cars or would you consider something bigger like a saloon?
Oh and a tip would be to soon as your set on a model check the owners forums for what to look for when your buying and how to maintain the car knowledge equals power . |

Thanks Codes, I'll have a look at the Focus.
I wouldn't mind a saloon but so far all the insurance quotes I've done seem to work out more expensive for anything bigger than a 5-door hatchback. |

thats a bit rubbish I hate how insurance companies can effectively dictate what car you are allowed to drive through high premiums.
Best bet for insurance is to go through a broker Adrian Flux, A-Plan and a few others aren't bad. Limiting milage is also usefull for lower prices as is putting a more experienced driver preferably a lady on the policy as a named driver.. Oh and join pistonheads if you speak to flux they offer discount to members ..
Note named is in bold as I'm suggesting putting a named driver on a policy that is in your name with you as the primary driver and them as well a named driver. This is legal other way around it isn't.. |

Thanks Andy, I wasn't sure about the Pug, was only looking at it cos it's cheap to insure. I've heard good things about the Skoda, it actually seems like quite a nice car and looks more expensive than it is too, which is nice. Do you know if there are any common problems I should be looking out for with the Skoda or VW.
@Codes: I don't really know anyone with more experience that I could put on the policy, other than my mum. I've been driving for over 13 years but because I sold my last car about 4 years ago they don't care that I've effectively got about 7 years no claims, so the premium they want is crazy.
I always used to use Adrian Flux but they want over a grand off me for a car that others only want about £760 for.
When I've got more of an idea what car I want I'll probably give them and others a call and see if I can negotiate some sort of NCB given my history. |

Ah I see probably won't make any difference to add a named driver then. Utterly silly the quotes your getting btw 13 years holding a license seems to count for nothing which is wrong .. Worst bit is coming from a bike your going to be much more skilled at spotting potential hazards than most as well.
Still if it helps double your premium and add £300 quid and your hitting where mine is at the moment . |

The MK4 Polo is a good choice, I had a 1999 S reg 1.4L and it was a nice little car. It had only done 63k when I sold it and was still going strong.
As for insurance try brentacre they are a good broker based in Swansea. Currenlty im paying ~£600 for 59 plate Clio 1.2 with 5years NCD and 2 crashes on file (1 non fault, 1 100% fault no otehr cars involved) |

Yeah I'm looking at a 1.4 W reg, from around 2000.
No way! I just got a 1.4 W reg one for Oliver. Paid £720, mileage is quite high at 108K, but I'm not worried by that, it looks and runs fine,
I've already done a few hundred miles in it with no issues, it even had 4 fairly new tyres on.
Mondeo's are cheap to buy and run, (a lot cheaper than a Focus to buy and slightly better economy), but they're not so cheap to insure, although a focus isn't cheap to insure either. |

So you think the Fabia is a good car then? I think that's the one I'm leaning towards.
Did you buy it privately or through a dealer? Any tips on what to look for?
Sorry for all the questions, but as I'm on such a tight budget I need to get it right so it doesn't die on me and cost me loads to repair |

Oops, I was wrong, it was only £710
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 871wt_1139
My last half a dozen cars have mostly been from ebay, a couple from autotrader. All cheap generally < £600 (except for my mx5 which was £800). I decided to run them until the MOT costs more than the car, they're all lasted at least 2 MOT's before something stupid is gonna cost too much (e.g. the drivers side window motor went on my last one), never had an engine go and I've had a few with over 200K on them.
Because I'm buying them so cheap, I generally allow somat like £250 to sort odds and ends out, like maybe new break pads/discs, or a couple of new tyres, but the Fabia I got needs nothing doing except maybe a bit of chipped paint repairing.
Fabia's seem to have few problems, some people say the HT leads can need replacing, but that's the same on all cars tbh and not expensive. |

As I understand it, the Fabie, the VW Polo, and the Seat Ibiza are pretty much the same car with a different badge and slightly different internal trim, but then engine and most of the hardware is the same. |
