Weirdly my confidence level often decreases as the holiday goes as the more tired I become the more the harder the proper technique becomes and the more I worry about wiping out spectacularly and hurting myself. Quite irrational really and the result of a couple of big falls over the years which were the result of not concentrating late in the day or after a big night out. Despite all the wonders of science we're still a long way from fully understanding the human mind!
My advice is just stick with it and for every bad there will be plenty of good days. |

| As a lot of ppl say when you start messing with freestyle - your first challenge is to overcome your mind's doubt. As soon as you think you wont make the end of the rail you wont... Break down each move (whether it's a simple turn or freestyle trick) into nice achievable bite-size pieces, visualize yourself doing each of these and realize what you're doing is either something you've done loads of times before or well within your grasp. Know it sounds silly but as soon as you think you'll fail or think you're having a bad day you'll find everything a challenge. The mind is a powerful ally and enemy... |

Yes. The human mind...
When I started mountain biking, I had to learn to look at the empty gap and not to look at the trees on either side and think you will hit one.
My next mind challenge is the ollie/nollie! I can do it on the flat from a stationary position but not on the move. |

I find olliing off a small lip is alot easier than ollieing from a flat bit. When I was at Hemel I found the roller on the left easier to ollie from and the small bits of snow that collect at the bottom.
At Tam I find the lip on the flat section halfway down is a good ollie point.
I dont know if its right or not but get low down on the board and when your about to ollie pop up think coiled spring. |

I went back to Tam yesterday afternoon. It was very quiet, maybe 25 people in the slope. This time I asked for the board I had a good session the time before last (the poor session).
Indeed, it felt better from the word go. I went back to the basics and built up. My turns were close to my previous best and surprise, my switch turns felt almost natural and were definitely best ever. I do not remember having the weight on the back foot at all.
I managed a few mini-ollies as well from the lip point. I think I was not leaning away from the direction of travel hard enough before! I now need to work on popping higher. |
