Hello,
My name is Jodi and this is pretty much going to be my dissertation question for uni. Although I have snowboarded a couple of times my love really lies with surfing and skateboarding (although due to a recently broken clavicle i'm not doing much of any of it at the moment)
I have always wondered what makes rider automatically prefer a certain foot forward and am surprised that there seems to be no obvious pattern or reason to explain or predict this. I considered many things - looking at whether the person is right or left handed, right or left eye dominant, even asking men about which testw hung lower all in search of my answer.
(none of the above got me further to knowing)
If you guys could let me know your thoughts or any more guesses you might have that would help me out so much and in return I could keep you up to date with my findings? Once I have done more research the resuts could prove useful to coaches or riders themselves, who knows.
anyway, cheers in advance
love
Jodi

Regular and a southpaw, right ball is lower.
If you are basing your research more in the realms of skateboarding would it be an idea to find out how people push as well, ie normal or mondo? this could reflect something.
I don't know what, but something. |

Hahaha this essay is going to be full of balls and dominant hands...maybe the odd inuendo here and there too...why not through masterbation hand in on the poll too..
Not really sure whether to go skateboard or surf yet however although thanks for the tip
I'm thinking about investigating how the foot preference comes about - such as; does it develop with age or is it aquired naturalyl at birth? My neighbour has a toddler I think i might put him on a board and see where his feet go.
Do you guys want me to report back if i find anything useful over the next few weeks?
For the record I am -
Goofy
right handed
left eye dominant
left boob ever so slightly bigger
middle of the bed
feck right collarbone
cheers! xx |

I remember reading somewhere, perhaps on here, that the way to work out what your front foot is going to be is to get a smooth wooden floor and some thick socks. Then run and slide, you will naturally put your preferred foot first.
How do you find which eye is dominant?
Oh and for the record, as a bloke I don't have a specific side of the bed, it should just be the one nearest the door to protect the lady should an intruder enter the chamber.
Unless she's out for the night, then I'm a diagonally across the whole bed kind of guy. |

If i run and slide on a floor i do it goofy, but ride regular.
Eye dominance - I do a fair bit of clay shooting so its something that I know i'm right eye dominant, which is a bonus as shooting right handed being left eye dominant is a bitch!
Quick couple of basic tests - http://www.ehow.com/how_2251949_determi ... t-eye.html |

hahaha nah chilli all info is useful i'm sure! And Barry I love that about protecting your lady incase of an intruder - you must be a real gent
Incase there are no thick socks or wooden flooring available you can take the same test by just standing with your feet together and leaning foward - your prefered leg wil be the one that steps out first to stop you falling on your face.
I also found out my dominant eye from shooting - quick way to test is looking through a toilet roll tube (like a telescope) the eye that you bring it to will be your dominant one.
Does anyone find that their opposite arm to their dominant is stronger?

That's interesting. I've done the 'being pushed without warning from behind' test, and it's the left leg that goes for the save. I ride regular.
But, we did this exact thing yesterday at Hemel, and leaning forwards, it's my *right* leg that flicks out to hold me up.
Feels like if I'm shoved, then my body lifts over my toes and gives my left time for a solid flat footed save. but leaning forward, my body's already dropping, and it's my right TOES that pop out to catch me.

Not every test comes to the same outcome. I found that once you start riding you can trick the test because you sub-conciously put the other foot forward.
Theres plenty of mentals who ride reg and the ride pomas and scoot goofy, but cant ride switch.
Same with the stance finder in TSA, if you can already ride its a bit of a waste of time as you will have reasonable balance because you can snowboard. |
