I am new to this snowboard game and I am only at the slow side to side and stop level, is there anywhere I can go during the closed season where I can get better. I thought that you can't use the indoor slopes until you are at a better level than me.

Any feedback or just general abuse is fine but remember I might meet you at some stage so be kind-ish.

And why do folks have a tag line on the bottom with clever stuff in it, I don't only coz I don't know how to add it, but I can just put it on the end.

Chickens and dwarfs scare me but beer makes me funnier, I think.

1) where are you? would help to know to suggest anywhere to go... Profile says "up north" but m8, that could be friggin anywhere (except Cornwall)
2) what level? you say you think you can't use a slope but have you had any lessons? "slow side to side and stop" kinda could be a variety of things... side-slipping side-to-side or garlands with some foot-peddling? or managing to turn side-to-side and then stopping?

know it costs cash, but there's usually some v good lesson deals during the off-peak summer season - would be far better in the long run than trying to figure it out by yourself if you can find somewhere to practice.

If you don't want to pay and just want to figure it out (although as derek said its best to get proper tution) I'm pretty sure that the usage rules are you can control your speed, stop and link turns seems like you can do 2 of these. I know for sure that I've seen people use chill and can't do any of those but have signed the disclaimer saying they can. I don't know about anyone else but I've never seen anyone asked to leave before, only warned.

Lessons are basically the best way to try and progress quicker. Even if its just a single lesson to get your confidence. The normal level you need to reach is that you can control your speed and stop. Normally, if you don't wipe out into people and don't keep falling off and stopping the poma, you'll prob get away with it, but its defo best to have lessons to get above that level first. Go to http://www.snowboardclub.co.uk/slopes to find a slope near you.

In terms of the signature thing, you need to click on the profile link that's above the forum here (In the same bit that has FAQ, Search, Memberlist etc) and you can add a signature there!

I have seen 1 person kicked off the slope because he coulden't control his speed or turn really.

there was a lesson going on at the time and the instructor used that guy as an example of how not to ride. They let him do 3 runs then kicked him out.

But that was at Tam.

Lessons!

It would probably only take you two hours of lessons to get your head round the basic level needed to use one of the indoor slopes, ie controlling speed, stopping and turning.

After that you can get out there and practice till your heart's content.

If 'up north' means Scotland and you're near Xscape a couple of hours there would set you well on your way, but if you're looking for cheaper then there's loads of dry slopes around that will also get you going pretty quickly.

But if 'up north' means somewhere south of Gretna but north of Watford I'm sure someone else can point you in the right direction.

Yep, definatly roll with lessons as others said. I'm currently going through lessons and need a Level 6 before they will let me loose onto the slopes alone. Even though lessons may seems expensive, they are totally worth it in my opinion. Once someone has shown you how to get that plank under feet twisting and turning, you'll be able to practice as much as you like.

You will progress faster with lessons than figuring out on your own. Probably with less pain too.

I would reiterate what people have said about lessons. I used to ski but after a few lessons I started skiing with my mates getting tips from them but ended up reaching a plateau where I couldn't progress any further because I'd developed so many bad habits. That's why I started snowboarding and having learned properly I still have some kind of lesson most years when I go away and I'm now 100 times better on a board than I ever was on skis.

Sorry people, I did not give you all the info needed. I am from Newcastle (awesome place) and I can link turns, control speed to a basic level and switch goofy to regular and back but I am very good at falling over and if you give me ice type snow I will fall over every time I try to stop. I have had about 3 hours of lessons but I am old, fat and unfit so the phrase "old dog new tricks" springs to mind. the best way to understand my level is if you know Winterfunman, he drinks at the same level I board and I board at the same level he drinks.
One other thing, has anyone heard about a indoor snowthing getting built in Sunderland?

Sunderland council has a plan for redeveloping the area around the football stadium and that plan certainly includes a snowdome but last I heard through the property industry grapevine was that the council had been speaking to potential operators who were looking at whether or not they think it will be financially viable. Even if an operator decides it's viable by the time they've negotiated the purchase of the site, got planning, etc. it's going to be a few years before the place is open for business.

Greetings Big Danno

I have become an unofficial representative online for Sunderlands dry ski slope. (add us on facebook "silksworth freestyle club" we take photos and vid on a monday night once a month)

The place is great. We have a freestyle club on a Monday night. You can just come down and ride and watch others try to kill themselves on jumps and rails. Very Happy 2 hour for under a tenner

also we have an unlimited ride card for about £30 for 2 months (doesn't include clubs). its a bargin. I use and abuse it and spend way too much time at the slope.

As for the snow dome. The company who was running the plans for the redevelopment, Sunderland Arc. had apparently bought up the land and all the scrap yards etc what were where the shopping center and dome was ment to be had been cleared..... however they seem to have gone out of business and none of the info is on the website any more. http://www.sunderlandarc.co.uk/

I think It would be safe to say that we wont be getting a snow dome any time soon.

shame..... But it does mean Silksworth will survive!

hey danno,

you know what would be best in my opinion. Start putting some pennies by for the next season. Eye up a mountain range somewhere and then go board on a mountain.

Lessons are great and continue them but end of the day it's a tiny little slope that you go up and then down and then up and then down. It's not a waste of money doing that; but honestly you got to board a proper slope.

That is where the next level is at.

Smile
