Yeah so I'm new to it all and being that way I'm asking questions about things that maybe have been asked already and one thing I need to ask is why is it generally encouraged to use either a regular or goofy lead.
Been going with regular because that's what I was told, lead with the opposite foot you kick with. But can't help think I've only practised half of what I could be doing. I'm leading with my weaker foot and the back foot (the right) isn't doing all that much as the weight is forward. Yeah it's doing something.... but.
Going to start practising riding goofy, it's just the same actions. Can't help feel teaching regular / goofy is only teaching half a boarders potential.
It can't be that difficult... can it? Have I missed something? Is there much of a point to learning both? benefits?
Anyone else ride ... eh... double barrelled. Is there a term for it? |

Switch.
I think so too, though I've pushed myself in "regular" before riding switch. Apparently most people have one foot more dominant, I know I do, but maybe you're just a bit more ambi-footed or whatever it's called! |

Most people I expect to say the earlier you learn to ride switch (the opposite to your favoured direction) the better.
For freestyle the benefits are pretty obvious, being able to take off or land switch opens up a whole world of tricks.
For general riding it is not essential but most of us strive to improve switch riding because it's fun and gives you more control in tricky situations like riding through a tree run and hitting a bump that throws your balance so that in order not to wipe on the next tree you have to turn whilst riding switch
A friend of mine who has only had one week on the mountain basically never decided which way to ride and was riding both ways equally well by the end of the week
BTW I kick with my right and lead with my right |

I'm apparently goofy but whenever I bomb out a little I seem to have so much control when I end up regular?? However, I seem to prefer riding the poma/starting as goofy.. |

I'm right footed and goofy too, I've never had a lesson, just mates telling me the basics and youtube etc.. But on my first day boarding I realised I could get up the poma easier with my right foot forward, so I stuck with that. I'm just at the stage where I can take on most different coloured runs riding normally, and do a few turns on a green run switch.
I would say it's a good idea to learn switch as soon as possible though, once you know you can ride well with one way, it's a lot more tempting just to switch straight back to that when you're riding switch. |

hey folks, that's the thing with n00bs. You tell them to lead with their left and that's all they do until a time when they decide to change but find it difficult to do so. Like Nickster99s friend don't make the n00bs decide tell them it's possible to 'go both ways' ... *shakes head*... very poor.
What's kick? as in kick with your right?
Maybe it's more difficult for others but the urge to set off goofy will not go away when standing at the top of the slope and I just don't see how it can be any more difficult. I'm practising riding switch next time for sure.
The end goal to pull a 180 half way down the slope, the crowd roars... sweet! |

Plenty of threads of how to decide whether you're goofy or regular, but for sure, learning both is always good. A bi-directional board, ducked and centred stance would be an advantage if you spend a lot of time riding switch of course.
The important thing is to smile, even when it's hurting. |

That's a load of balls. I hope it wasn't an instructor who told you that.
You should learn to ride the easiest way for you. Some people its regular, some goofy. You don't learn switch because someone has decided that's the way your gonna ride.
Once you can ride your prefered way, thats when you learn to ride switch.
Only really lucky ambidextrous people will take to going both ways just as easily. |

Yeah it was an instructor, if you kick with your right foot your regular. It feels natural enough. Actually I have found instructors to be inconsistent with what they teach. Had about 5 different instructors and they all tell different things. They are all decent guys but it tells me everyone rides slightly different and that's what they teach, they're style.
I want to learn to ride switch, not because someone has told me, but because it feels like I've only learned half of how to linked turns. It shouldn't be too difficult. |

Yeah that's just plain wrong.
think how difficult riding a skateboard the 'wrong' way would be. Give yourself a chance ride the natural way to you first. If you were in socks and were to run and slide on a shiny floor, which foot is forward? (search on here, there's other ways to find out too) thats your lead foot.
It's a more 50-50 split between people than 'are you right or left footed'.
Learning switch is important to more advanced riding but learn your way first, you'll start enjoying yourself more quickly. As Dunx said it's about having fun. |

That can't be part of the board (ducked)? is that not how you angle your bindings?
