I doubt that anyone would consider Planet Ice to be 'built'. It's made of wood and tarpaulin and doesn't have a huge seating capacity. It's crap and was only supposed to be a temporary solution as the old ice rink was demolished to make way for the new St Davids.
There's a Cardiff Snowdome group on Facebook, but it all seems to have gone a bit quiet from them recently. However, this was posted on the group at the end of November:
'I can confirm that Cardiff Council is to shortly begin a procurement exercise to find a new development partner to build a potential new snow facility for the International Sports Village (ISV).
Obviously with the current financial climate being as it is, getting someone to deliver a snow facility is not going to be easy but this is a positive step which should be underway within the next two to three weeks.
The ISV has been a huge success story over the last few years with fantastic facilities such as the Cardiff International Pool and the Cardiff White Water centre opening and thriving.
The Council is committed to expanding the ISV and adding more attractions, of which the snow facility will hopefully be one.

There's also this article from Wales online.
I'd say, as a rough estimate, the dome will be built by 2014 at the latest if they can find someone to take the plans ahead. The South West is practically the only area of the UK that doesn't have easy access to a snowdome, so building one makes sense. |

Yeah, it's been quiet in the group lately...primarily on my part because of the arrival of my son back in December! Sort of taken up any spare time I had!
That's not to say that there's nothing going on though.
The original tender to build the permanent ice rink has been pulled because the winning party allegedly didn't respond to key deliverables requested by the council.
The tender is being reopened with a view to combining (improved) ice and new snow facilitities (though this may still be staged). This would be a logical step under the circumstances. More detail on the group (same link as above).
What this does mean is that the two groups campaigning for movement in their respective areas (us for snowsports and SORAC representing all ice users) have a shared objective and will hopefully be able to work together.
If anyone fancies adding their weight or ideas to the campaign then please feel free to join the group.
Cheers

Activity has picked up to a degree again re Cardiff.
Facebook group has seen increased activity, council has issued a "PIN" ahead of a formal tender which includes provision for a snow slope, and we have a website and forum at www.cardiffsnowdome.org
Please feel free to drop by and offer support, comments, anything you want!
Cheers

Good to see some movement. Be careful with the "SnowDome" moniker though as that's a registered trademark worldwide I believe.
Love the "Built it and they will come" image. |

| Cardiff Council are like 30mil in debt, luckily my job with them is still safe, currently anyway. They just need an investor to come up with a few million cash, 70mil should be enough. I would build it if I won the euromillions. |

Dunx...yeah I raised that point a while back. We'll deal with that if an when it raises its head. To be honest, the name of the group isn't so important...it's the goal that counts. Subtle change to the name won't make much difference in the long run. We'll see what happens...
Thanks for the nod re the image...photographer was Jess Roberts (see www.jessicarobertsphotography.com for more of her work, there's some good stuff on there!) who's a member of the group. Should hopefully be seeing more such images and promo material over coming months!
Francium...until the Weston facility is actually built and running then we're making no assumptions. As is all too often the case, there are always hurdles along the way with such projects and there are no guarantees. Even if it is built then there's no reason why a facility in Cardiff shouldn't be viable...look at Hemel and MK, they're even closer together!
BlackRam...Any Council debts shouldn't be an impact on viability of a facility in Cardiff as the Council are not intending to fund or run it. According to recently published documents (see the group!) they will lease the land to a developer for a "peppercorn rent". Their involvement ends there. Mind you, depending on where you work in the Council then you probably know that already! |

haha, i read somewhere you need £10 million to build one - if i won the euro millions i think id spend a lot more than that, and build upon pre-existing steep slopes.
Something like the eden project in design, but many times larger and built over a peak
Ah, its good to dream...[/code] |

| A bit more than GBP10m to build one - more like 20 - 30m. |
