Off to Italy on Saturday, can't wait!
Can't make my mind up whether to have some lessons or not. This will be my 4th holiday and I can get around the mountain ok. Reds no problem, blacks too if they're not too mental.
Thing is, if I have any bad habits, will I get to the point where I'm too far gone to change? Going with a big group and I'd be gutted if I missed out on some top off-piste adventures etc cos I'm stuck in school.
Decisions, decisions.........

Lessons are never a waste of time. A good instructor will always help you to improve no matter how good you are.

I'm planning on getting a day/afternoon lesson if I can afford it next time I go, I think it'll be worth it.

I'd say normal group lessons become much less useful as you progress further.

So if you can afford it go for an hour long private lesson. Instructor will concentrate solely on what you are doing wrong and you'll hardly miss any group adventures.

I agree with kerb. I always get lessons when I go away, even if it's just a one hour private lesson, just helps to keep you pointing in the right direction technique-wise. And they also know where some good off piste can be found so you can usually combine lesson with pow adventure Smile I've found that it takes me 4 times longer to pick something up in a group lesson than it does in a private lesson, so although the lesson costs are higher you need a hell of a lot less of them to get the same out of it.

If you think you have bad habits its always a good idea to get them ironed out as soon as you can. I was saying this on the bash this year, I often have to try and keep up with my boyfriend and his mates and as a result I find myself developing bad techniques because I'm just trying to keep up and not concentrating on what I should be doing, I tend to take myself off for a day or so to concentrate on technique etc.

how good are the rest of the group your going with? Riding with a group in itself can be a learning experience. But yes, if your got the money and the time, get as many lessons as you can i say!

Book a private lesson and if there's an overnight dump just tell him you want to learn to ride pow better and spend the day off piste. Chances are you'll find better untracked runs with him than your mates would've and you can boast about it over dinner that evening Very Happy

Once you're up and running private lessons are the way forward and you'll learn more in a couple of hours than you will in a week of group lessons because you have the instructors undivided attention. I actually became a boarder because I spent too much time skiing with mates instead of having lessons and reached a point where I has so many bad habits skiing I just wasn't really going to progress much further. Have made sure that I've had regular lessons and always concentrate on my technique and I'm now much more confident on a board than I ever was on skis.

dont rule out having a weeks lessons with ESF or the likes. I've always gone down that route if the group i'm away with is doing the same, its better than riding by yourself all week and i've always learned something Smile

Thanks for the replies.
The rest of the group are mixed abilities really. Problem is, I've come to snowboarding late in life (wrong side of 40 now!) and although I've progressed ok, can't help but feel I have a finite amount of time before my riding peaks.
I reckon the private lesson could be the way forward as suggested, I guess a few pointers on stance etc and I can work on the advice form the lesson myself for the rest of the holiday.
More snow forecast.......come on!!!!

Only thing i'd say is, if you can afford it, feck it why not, if you can't afford it just pin it and win it when your in italy? Learn from a broken collar bone or 2 and some insurance claims. Bit of a twatty way but it's all about confidence man. Just you're choice how you gain it!

Other side of 40 though.... i'm sure a few to many bumps or a break would be some what inconvenient.

Wow!!!
got back yesterday, what a week.
Didn't bother with the lessons in the end, good job too. My Missus had some and they only had 2 instructors, she was in the better group and still felt held back by less experienced guys. I would have been bored senseless.
I ended up having a totally different education. Powder.
2nd day it dumped, then the sun came out and the off-piste was a sensation. Got dragged though a 'back-country valley' off the top of the mountian, in the middle of nowhere. Probably stupid, but amazing experience. After that, I've learned to love the burning back thigh muscle. Thumbs Up
