| Had lessons by an Austrian teacher...and he was like act like your carrying carpets...stiffen the upper body and arms. From doing that you realise after a while you dont flail arms! |

Handbag hand or flailing arms or whatever you want to call it will be as a result of your stance.
Your arms will be compensating for something you are not doing.
Most commonly, this is an issue on the toe edge becasue people break at the waist and their bum and hips move backward as a result, pushing your centre of gravity back and not over the toe edge where it should be so you have to use 'extra measures' to compensate.
Try getting someone to film your riding, have a look at your posture and see if you are bent over. As a general rule, the angle of your shins should match the angle of your upper body.
No harm in getting a lesson either if you want some of these little habits ironed out. Even if you ride at a good level there is always something new you can learn! |

I put my hands in my pockets at first. That really helped but it only goes so far. I don't put them in my pockets any more and nothing has been said about my arms, they must be all right.
One instructor told me to put my hands behind my back and it never helped at all, balance was off, kept leaning forward over my toe edge. Another instructor told me off for doing it. He recommended holding on to the sides of my trousers which was the same as hands in pockets for me. |

| get yourself down on a prog sesh it's only £2 more than a recreational at tam so nothing wrong with the price. You just talk to the instructor when you need help and do whatever you like if you don't need help. |
