Since i had a lesson a couple of weeks ago the outside of my knees have been sore after boarding. I was told that i dont flex and extend enough, so it has started since i have been doing it correctly.
I have tried different stance angles but none of them make it any better.
Has anyone got any suggestions?? |

| I have tried +15 and +12 on front foot and -15,-12,-9 on the back. I use a 20" stance and im 5ft7. I didnt go wider as i assumed this would make it worse. |

| Without being patronizing how much other exercise do you do? It might simply be a case of new muscle groups |

if you've only just started "doing it properly" with bent knees then it could just be them sore due to exercise??? snowboarding uses a lot of muscles that you'd never normally, so legs do get pretty sore when you're starting out, especially when you're constantly "squatting" to some degree or other with your knees bent.
stance and angles are all down to the rider - some ppl are naturally wider and more duck-footed than others. Believe a good rule of thumb is either shoulder-width or just to stand on your board with bent knees (without bindings in place), add an inch or 2 and try that - basically what feels "natural" and then a tiny bit more (to get you to keep your knees bent instead of constantly straightening them). If you're doing freestyle it can help to widen it, but personally find it can make piste-stredding more tiring (so I tend to have a wider stance in a dome than outdoors) - also find that a wider stance naturally tilts the feet out a little more so have something like 24" +/- 18 for domes and about 22 +/- 15 when away (I'm 5'11 and certainly not a lanky long legged person).
*edit*

| I regulary used a gym for most of last year and never got sore knees when doing squats, so I'm not sure it's that, although you never know. I only tried different angles because I read that if the angles between your feet is too large then it can cause knee problems. |

Just been reading up and weak glutes can cause knee and ankle pain during excercise. Will
do some exercises and see how i get on. See if it gets better the more i flex/extend correctly.
Thanks for the replies. |

Is it inside the knee like the joint or the small muscles around the knee?
If you're starting out and trying to find the right stance it can be very difficult. The stance can depend on so many factors, including riding style, length of legs, natural tendency to rotate legs (both inwards or outwards).
A quick and dirty trick to find your natural width is to jump in the air and land without toppling forward or backwards. The feet position should be marked each time for maybe three times. You'll then get an average, this tends to be what you personally find comfortable to balance on. Again, this is only a quick cheat and doesn't give a accurate figure, just shows what is comfortable for you.
In terms of angles, it's all down to preference, however, when people start out, they tend to be learn best on 0 on the back and +9 - +15 on the front. But this isn't good for freestyle or landing as the back leg tends to get straighten and it turns the shoulders out of line with the board (IMHO) therefore introducing issues with toeside turning. |

Either side of your knee cap sounds like you are straining your outer lateral ligaments. Is your knee also tender at the sides when you poke it?
Width has already been mentioned, that would be what I would look at now if you have already been playing with your angles, that would put strain on the knee if your legs were too far apart.
When your knees are not sore you can try doing small squats on one leg (slowly) this strengthens and improves stability. Hope it gets better for you |

| I do actually get swollen knees (especially on the lead leg) while I snowboard. I do think it is move down to muscle strength. Im currently training my legs at the gym for a snowboarding Hol in Feb. I will keep you updated as to whether the increased muscle strength help with my knees. |

I have got my stance width right. I tried many widths over the last few months and 20" is correct but angles all feel comfortable. Its my back knee that hurts more. Its more the little muscles around the knee cap. It goes away by the next day though.
I did some light squats at lunch and found that my back foot (right foot) naturally has more angle to it. How would have less angle on your front foot fair when boarding? |

| could it just be that up and down squats aren't the same as holding the squatted shape for long? like you're momentarily using those muscles instead of long term lactic acid burn (whatever the words are). Do you get the pain when you sit against a wall for a good minute? |
