Hi,

anyone know if anyone keeps an up to date list of how the different airlines rate as far as what they charge etc. for carriage of snowboard equipment? Was thinking of flying KLM via Amsterdam to Munich for New Year and maybe SAS to Sweden later in the year.

Cheers

Probably best just to call them, although saying that, thats what we did with TCA to canada and then they changed their minds on the way back and we go stung for £100 each to get our boards home

Most carriers have this information on their websites. I did see a list some years ago, but these things do change.

I went with KLM in November and April and wasn't charged. They did however include the weight of the board as part of my luggage allowance.

i think (but dont quote me) if you pay for a board carriage it doens't go as your luggage allowance, but if you dont have to pay extra its part of it.

ba dont charge but weigh them

check website for correct details me thinks

Found this on the KLM website:

Skis and Snowboards

* If you wish to take along ski or snowboard equipment, please indicate the number, their weights and dimensions (including their packing) when you make your flight reservation. If you have booked your flight online, you can contact the nearest KLM or Northwest Airlines office to pass on this information.

* A set of ski or snowboard equipment may consist of one board or one pair of skis, 2 poles and 2 ski boots.

* Carriage of skis and snowboards is free of charge when your baggage allowance is not exceeded, otherwise excess charges apply.

* The charges listed in the table above do not apply to ski and snowboard equipment; instead, the standard excess baggage charges apply. However, for one (1) ski or snowboard equipment exceeding the free allowance you will be charged only for 3 kilos irrespective of the actual weight of the ski or snowboard equipment.

* For any additional ski or snowboard equipment in excess of the free allowance, the standard excess baggage charges apply.

* For flights to the USA, Canada and Mexico, a charge equal to 33% of the standard excess baggage rate will be incurred. This rate will vary according to your destination. For the exact amount, please contact your travel agent, the nearest KLM or Northwest Airlines office.

* Flying Blue Platinum members may take along one ski or snowboard equipment free of charge - on top of their free allowance - to all destinations except to the USA, Canada and Mexico.

We've been charged everytime we've been away to take our own equipment Crying or Very sad although we have always booked our trip with a travel agent/tour operator, not an independant flight.

To Andorra was about £15 each bag, to Italy was abount £20 i'sh can't remember exactly and this year to Bulgaria they were trying to charge us per person, even if we only take two bags Evil or Very Mad (4 of us are going).

Its £18 per person, we have only paid for two people and will stick two boards in each bag, as its unlikely they will open each bag and check how many boards are in there. Tight arses if they do.

We've always had to book them in as oversized luggage but the'y never been weighed in front of us, just gone through the old x-ray machine.

Try sneaking it on as hand luggage to save a few quid.

With SAS you can take one snowboard & boots as 'special baggage', included in free baggage allowance. Extra charges if it goes over the free baggage allowance.

As I have never taken one before what would a snowboard/bindings/boots combination normally weigh roughly? I am always at or near my limit anyway!

Fly Zoom allow one 'sports equipment bag' (including Scuba Equipment with Tanks!!!!) for free. If you are going to Canada, they are by far and away the cheapest, and now also the nicest.
