So we've been chatting the past few days on our facebook page about the whole no-back movement after a fan posted the question http://www.facebook.com/pages/Onyx-Snow ... 4605411243 So thought it would be good to add the chat here too Smile

Basically the theory goes that removing your high backs gives a greater range of movement and a looser skate feel. We found a couple of articles posted that give some peoples opinions too:
http://snowboarding.transworld.net/1000 ... e-ranquet/
and
http://www.shayboarder.com/2010/05/the- ... ience.html

While the Onyx coaches have their own opinions about the whole thing after trying it, we just wondered if any of you guys had given it a blast?

Did you like/hate it, and will any of you be riding the whole season no-backed?

Baden

I've tried it and don't like it much. I think I rely on my high backs for riding on my heel edge too much for it to be ok for me. It just felt too loose and sketchy.

Sounds kinda fun, but never tried it would have a clue if it's worth it or not.

Will Hughes and Jez Sladen are converts to no back riding and have convinced me to Try it this season. Will said its so good for freeriding and even went as far as to say that rather than riding a reverse camber board you should ride regular camber and remove your high backs, gives you excatly the same feel apparently.

it helped me when i was learning, to stop relying on my highbacks and get more control when foot steering. but i wouldnt do it long term. i need all the support i can get!

I can imagine its goof for lip/rail tricks and crazy tweaks... but carving heel edge would be limited surely?

ah yes.... good point.

when i was given my first set of bindings the high backs were only about 3 inches tall and really round, litterally would have only come up to teh same height as some mid top basketball boots.

oh for goodness sake, which bandwagon can we jump on now! And to think until recently everyone looked back on the Low Back craze of the 1990s and laughed cos they were sketchy as anything! I guess next week we'll all be having baseless bidnings!

Same with rocker boards. The ones I've tried have basically succeeded in making snowbaording feel slightly sketchier. Nice one, exactly what I've been looking for!

Didnt people used to hack the high backs of bindings back in the early - mid 90's?!?

I can believe that actually, the freedom of movement fits I suppose. I still think it's sketchy when railing a heelside carve though.

EDIT: Just thought a bout it some more and it would be kind of like noboarding a la Wolle Nyvelt except you're still attached.

Haven't tried it, but I can see what Ace is saying

After reading both articles and watching the lil video on the second link, it does seem like theres a general emphasis around "a loose skate feel" -- possibly not the best idea if you're bombing it down a mountain?

Would love to give it a go though, bindings do restrict the feet quite a bit

from reading through the Mike Ranquet article, basically it seems that its good for some things, and would be worse for other things. So basically you need to carry two pairs of bindings with you.

I've tried riding without high backs when they were busy self destructing, and I lost one of them. It made it feel sketchy. Yes I did notice more movement available to me, but not in a good way!

I've got a Snurfer! I think they're the next big thing. No high-back or bindings, just a few staples in a lump of wood and a rope to hang on to.
