I just went to Malaga and back on a sports bag (£25 each way) but with no checked bag with a 26kg board bag (2 boards, weeks worth of stuff) ... they didnt bat an eyelid at that.
YMMV though...

AA and Virgin are pretty easy.
2 Boards in a bag (without bindings), with some pads on the way out, on the way back some clothes in there.
Dont think they care so long as you dont exceed the weight.

I also had a good experience with AA, when I flew with them I was well underweight on the way there, but on the way back brought back two snowboards, bindings (without paying for board carriage or anything) and new boots ontop of all my other luggage.
They didn't bat an eyelid when I took it to check in, just said they hoped I would have a great flight!
