Looking at all my options - How hard is it to get jobs as an instructor around the UK? The question started as my girlfriend is moving to Manchester and at one point I was desperate to get a job there so I can ride, but also have an excuse to move there. And then it kind of built from that - So how hard IS it? I mean theres surely no specific time of year to apply, or do people usually leave in the winter leaving vacancies open? How many instructors might they have on a team, say at Manchester?
Is there any information anyone could give me to prepare should I apply in the coming weeks? Thanks
- Pete |

| Reckon you might be more likely to get a full time position over winter, as chances are many instructors will go away to teach on a real mountain during winter. |

| As a qualified instructor I think it's not too difficult to get part time work at an indoor slope. Full time would be hard, as they employ very few full timers. |

the biggest problem is that demand is high from people who want to be an instructor.
Last year at chill factore i was told that they got 138 applications during the september period.
there are just more people getting qualified than there are jobs, from the 7 of us on my BASI 1 course last year i am the only one thats teaching. i think that Missbint will say something similar about those on her course.
Probably 100 people every year get Basi 1 and they are all chasing the same few jobs |

That may be the case, but then anyone who is going to go full time as an instructor seriously as a career is highly unlikely to want to stay in the UK over winter and teach full time in a Dome.
Sure you might not get a full time job to start, but if you got partime hours, then built your way up, I'm sure when everybody left for winter, you could get a full time position for the winter if you actually carried on and stayed in the UK.
I think there are very few people who would want to stay teaching full time in the UK anyway.
While it's true that hundreds of people do instructors exams, the majority never teach. It's still a good way to improve your riding as it makes you think about it... also an excuse for students to take a GAP year and convince their parents to fund one of those £8,000+ instructor courses abroad.
When I did my CASI level 1 in Canada, I actually had Greg (something or other) who was the head of CASI BC doing it, as he was getting out the office and back to grass roots so to speak. He said that literally thousands of people, especially foreigners would do the course, but never teach. He said it was obviously great money for them, but he doesn't understand why people do it. |

I'm a BASI 2 and a CASI 2 and couldn't get a job at CFe, despite months of trying. I know of at least 3 others trying at the same time as me, also BASI 2s who failed to get hired also, either part or full time.
It seems to me that they try to employ people who already work there, which is fair enough. I know a couple of people with instructor jackets on who used to work the lifts and front desk.
I'm lucky enough to have a well paid full-time instruting job every winter in Japan - but when I was told by the snowschool director that there was 300 applications - all with level 2 minimum - for a single job.
I think the bottom line is that there are lots of instructors, but not many students. Your best hope in my opinion is to teach both ski and snowboard, that makes you more employable. The only problem there is you end up teaching skiing all the time!
Good luck. |

Adam
Were you trying to get a job at CFe in the summer? I guess you were, as you're in Japan in the winter. The problem is in the summer there are fewer clients, but lots of instructors back from overseas. In the winter it's the other way round. |
