Right, this may seem slightly ubelievable at first but please bear with me. I'm the captain of a Regiment's snowboarding team in the Army. This year is the first year we'll have competed and so I've got a pot of cash to spend on kit for the team. There are 6 of us, 3 complete novices who'll be starting from scratch and 3 who have varying skill levels from OK 3 year boarder to 8 year pro.
My question is this: what's the best bet for outfitting the team, I have to get boards, bindings and helmets) not too worried about them, a helmet is a helmet). The events that we'll be competing in over the season will be PGS, slopestyle and snowboard-X. I could just get 6 sets of middle of the road all round boards, but I'd like to be a little more intelligent in how I go about it. Anyone got any thoughts? Also, anyone know of any dealers who would offer a good deal considering I'll be buying 6 complete sets of kit?
Thanks in advance for any advice guys, it's hugely appreciated.
Steve. |

Clothing wise you could go to a manufacture , telling them they could have some exposure on the gear ?
Contact TSA and explain what you have told us, or go to your local store and do same .
It has to be benficial to them to give good discount , or join here and use 10% discount at scuk shop |

| Your best bet is to get the team together, get them down the local board shop and buy package boards, boots and bindings, plus mention your a squaddie - normally gets you an extra discount |

chuck an email to Ellis Brigham's (TSA) and/or Snow & Rock's head office and see if they'll sponsor/discount you? or go to a smaller independent shop and ask for a bulk discount for buying 6 setups in one go (such a sizable single order should earn you some favours. Plus remember the oldie of offering to pay with cash instead of card so they're not hit by the Visa 2%? surcharge)...
Or, could always send an email to a UK branch of a snow-company that can supply a full setup of boards, bindings and boots (Salomon, Atomic, etc) and ask for help/discount/sponsorship directly. As a thought, could try Atomic as they're known throughout Europe but never seem that major here - could use that angle to help their uk promotions as a tie-in with the Army... never know without asking...
As for helmet is a helmet - some non snowboarding helmets are made from materials that become brittle in low temperatures and thus aren't suitable/recommended for snow-sports. If you're uk riding I doubt they'll suffer, but might be worth bearing in mind if you're getting equipment to use up on a cold mountain... |

Every rider will need a different board thats suits their ability, their weight and the event they're competing in. Boots will need to be fitted personally as well since every persons foot is different and all makes and models fit different, whats right for one person will be completly unsuitable and uncomfortable for another. Also a helmet isnt just a helmet again all fit different and a badly fitting helmet wont protect you at all.
Each person needs to go to the shop to get the right equipment for them personally, if you just buy in bulk and give everyone the same thing you'l be wasting your money. |

Nick however is completely right, bulk buying kit is pointless
the slopestyle guys will need completely different kit to boardx riders.
will most of the guys not have some kit already??
if you are planning a uniform.. then you could buy jackets/lids/gloves all as matching sets but again whats good for one is not all good for another
proving once again why snowboarding is not a team sport!!!
give all the riders and allowance, try and blag a discount at one of the big shops and let them get what they need, if you need some 'Team' things get matching beanies or some patches/embroidery |

| Surely all the guys in your team already snowboard and so have boards and bindings Boots ? and if not probably best bet is to discuss with them what they have used and are comfortable with |

| For comps ive been to in the past my unit just brought beginner - intermediate boards etc, because if people want to get serious about the sport they normally buy their own boards etc pretty quick. Also most of the people will probably have never boarded before and will learn their if its similar to what ive attended. |

To clear it up
The money is from sports lotto's , Sqn and regt funds "subs i.e £5 a month from every man" plus sponsorships etc, so most the money comes out our own pockets anyway and nothing from the tax man. |

Have you tried asking the full Army team for cast offs/spare kit?
They run about in matching jacket/pants all logo'd up.
Try BAE systems and the other engineering firms you work with/for too as they support teams too. BAE are normally keen.
As for board and equipment its been covered, job lots wont work as riders will ride with different styles and prefer different tech. One board is unlikely to cover all bases too. |

| I am certain a guy either on this forum or goneboarding was racing for the Army using a zepplin 161 in two or three disciplines that are no doubt the same. |

Adamski626 from the Goneboarding site is competing with the army with equipment to do the job in question, for his purposes in three disciplines.
Gs boards hardboots race bindings are just silly talk outside of the box.
F2 is a named suggestion only and competes activily in regional, national and international events in a range of disciplines or classes of events not just PGS.
Equipment would suit if they could get it,the type of model is secondary or even a luxury. |
