Hi all... Just after a bit of advice.
Myself and a friend are planning to go to Lake Tahoe for 3 or 4 weeks this coming january and were wondering what would be a good way to do it accomodation wise with there being only 2 of us. Keeping costs to a minimum if possible! All tips, advice, recommendations on accomodation and the area greatly received!
thx

Hi,
Went there in April for our honeymoon and loved the place. Can’t help much in the way of cheap accom as we blinged it in Squaw, but as we drove around Heavenly we did ponder going back without booking accom first and staying in one of the many small lodges we saw that you just don’t find on the internet. Bit of a gamble though if you get there and they are all full!
Either way you should hire a 4x4 and try out several of the resorts, Heavenly being a must, the views are amazing with snow on one side of the mountain and desert on the other, which from reading other posts most people seem to agree on!
We were based in Squaw Valley had loved it there too but when we visited Heavenly we were a bit gutted we weren’t based there! That said we had a powder day in Squaw which was epic and I will never forget.
We didn’t do Northstar & I read on here it is also known as flatstar but has a world class park, - depends what you are after.
If you are going for 3 or 4 weeks then consider adding Mammoth to your tour, it's about 3 hrs away and is fantastic. There we stayed in a place called the Alpenhof which is a 2 min walk from the lift that takes you across town to the slopes. I think it was quite reasonably priced, breakfast was a joke but there are ways around that and as the previous owner was Austrian it has an Alpine feel to it which is weird in such a modern American resort! But the beds are comfy and its location to the lift are the main thing so worth a look.
Sorry if not answering your question about cheap accom but you could also consider the common trip of fly to San Francisco and drive from there to Tahoe and then finish in Vegas, via Mammoth if you fancy it.
Lastly, check the road conditions before you drive to another resort, there is one place, I can’t remember the name of it, but if you think of the road around the lake as a clock, at 7 - 8 o’clock the road gets closed due to Avalanche risks, but if open, the views of the lake from there are pretty sweet, as there are from any point around it!
Hope some of that helps!
Cheers
hendo

I have been to Tahoe a few times, each visit I have booked directly with owners from vrbo.com. Not sure how much there is for small groups but have a look. Are car is a must there are about 13 resorts round the lake and the smaller ones are def worth a visit. If you look in some of the bars or diners you can often pick up some 2 for 1 vouchers for these resorts. Kirkwood is worth the trip out.

I went to Tahoe a few years back on a roadtrip, and it is a fairly awesome place! As stuw mentioned, a common trip is flying into SF then roadtripping it. SF to Tahoe is a really easy trip, depending on weather conditions. We did it over easter, so it was a lot warmer than it will be in Jan, so it'll be worth checking out whether all the roads are open.
For accomodation we ended up using Best Western hotels most of the way round the trip, and they worked out fairly cheap, especially with two people sharing and the rooms we large. We were onlyy there for two weeks so we didn't look into any lodge style accomodation.
A car is defo a good idea. We did three of the resorts - Heavenly, Northstar and Homewood. All three were fun. Heavenly had the views, but the resort was fairly strung out and there were long traverses in between the different arreas. Northstar I liked. Awesome parks, including the stash which was a lot of fun. Nothing that challenging, and a long drive from the south of the lake but it was fun. Homewood was my fave. Small, family run style resort, with a heap of fun runs and a really good park.
The run down to Mammoth is really cool too. You head over the mountains, and suddenly you're in the desert, and head past the beautiful mono lake. Defo worth doing! And then if you head down to Vegas from there through Death Valley, make sure you stop off at Bishop - an awesome typical Yank small town - and have a sandwich from Schatt's Bakery!
