There's a great iPhone app called Safari that lets you browse SCUK! And apparently there's a way to hack it to view other websites too... You just need to get to the "address" bar and change the value to whatever website you want.
Bonus Tip: If you hit the Maximize button at the top of the page it gives you more screen real-estate! |

Two years! That was fact-finding
Development is well underway.
iPhone Ap... to do what exactly? No point just having one for the sake of it. Suggestions welcome. |

I use my iPhone to phone and text people. Killer apps man, killer apps. Okay... and a spot of Texas Hold'em too.
We could do a "nearest discount" type app I suppose, but for the amount it would cost to develop, I think we'd rather do as Branny says and make sure we get a mobi version of the site operational instead. |

| Apart from a lightweight/fast mobile version (with automatic mobile browser recognition), I'd love to see SCUK turn to a vB4 setup. Awesome software and probably does most of what you want straight out the box, it's not free but it's well worth the licence fee in my opinion. |

I work in this area of dev and have built a few apps and quite a few mobile sites over the last couple of years.
Ive recently set myself up freelance (shamless plug) to do these and have some fantastic projects in the pipeline, some that may be of interest to us snowboarders, as well as an iPhone app for a Top National Band.
Most customers tend to go for a mobile site simply due to the fact that it works on more than one phone and doesn't need to be downloaded.
Like dunx says theres not much point in an iPhone app unless it can do probably the main thing this site is used for posting on a forum - for that it would need to integrate into the current forum software, so probably not much point until scuk 2 really if its all going to change.
However some parts of the site that could fit into an iphone app or a mobile site could be the following
Like mentioned nearest discount, however take this a step further and add directions to take you there, and also a button to call. Make that sale over the phone then go and collect.
Similarly with Tag insurance you could have a callthru page for them to generate sales / emergency claim line button.
Slopes would also be another useful addition to a mobile app, once again location would be a winner on this one.
Calendar of events, news feed and forum post feeds could also easily be done.
The trick with any mobile version of any site, be it an iPhone app or a mobile site is that you have to think differently to web. In the last year and half of developing these kind of sites, we have found most people browse on a mobile device for a specific reason and tend to spend very little time on the site browsing. Another interesting stat to take into consideration is that over 70% of people who hit sites using a mobile device tend to use iPhone/iPod touch
The other option i supose is build an iPhone app for the interim, something simple to use, which maybe uses the news, forum feeds for now.
If people are seriously interested in an iPhone app for scuk then what would you want in it ?
Oh and if anyone wants an iPhone app or a mobile site give me a nod, I will do you a cracking deal, and I do SCUK discount too |

Make access to the forum simple
I mainly go on my iPhone to look at threads in the Inn, navigating takes several page loads which can be a bit long when 3G/Edge signal is weak
Replying could also be better done, as currently the phone zooms right into the standard reply box making it a little difficult |

TBH I'm not feeling the whole iPhone app thing, mostly as I own a Blackberry lol.
Most apps are just fads IMHO, I've had loads on my BB and only about four have survived the past 12+ months and offered any sort of benefit. Plus I can't think of anything an app could do for SCUK that wouldn't be just as easily accessible via a mobile version of the site; Dinalli has some nice ideas but personally I'd never used any of them.
Forum integration etc is already covered by Tapatalk, no point in reinventing the wheel. Versions out for all major brands of smartphone and most of the big name forum software. The Beta on the BB is a bit weak ATM but the iPhone version gets rave reviews from every geek I know that's got it. |
