I'm off work next week, so decided to have a boarding holiday, but not abroad.

Cos I'm still new, and probably would only be doing nursery runs anyway, me and the missus have decided to have a week at Chill Factore.

With the 2.5 hours for the price of 1.5 and the 2 for 1 on Tuesdays, we managed to book 5 hours each per day so costing only 266 for the whole week.

OK so not the most glamourous holiday destination, but on the brightside, accomodation (at home) is cheap, plenty of places to eat, beer prices locally are about what you pay locally. NO AIRPORTS STRIKES to worry about, no additional baggage charges.

on the downside, theres still those pesky skiers GRRRRRR!

Are you mad!?!

Get up to Nevis or Aviemore, I'm heading back up end of next week, the conditions are superb for the UK, best they have had for 30 odd years!

It's huge up there too, and you'd be able to get a cheap room. You'd have 1000 times more fun, basically the place to yourself during the week and a road trip!

Think you'll get bored of the same small slope after a couple of hours, let alone after five hours every day for a week. I know the feeling of wanting to progress and improve your riding, but as Dylan says there are places you can go in the UK that wouldn't cost a great deal and would give you more experience.

End of the day though it's your choice and your money, so as long as you enjoys yourself it's all good.

nice idea, but 6 hour drive each way, 800 mile round trip, that 160 quid straight down the pan even before i've unpacked the board.

having just started to learn and spent a fortune on gear, moneys tight, so couldn't afford scotland. I had looked, but settled for learning on the indoor slope.

Also you ca guarantee with my luck, it would say the weather will be perfect for snowboarding, but i'd get up there and it would just rain!

Fair enough, but Dylan's right I think, 5 hours a day on such a small slope would become boring but I guess you will at least have time to concentrate on getting your skills tight without the other distractions of being away from home.

Personally though I'd have booked a shorter break in Scotland for the same price - the biggest benefit to a beginner is probably the length of the slope....on the size of the nursery bit at CFe you're at the bottom before you've really got going, so it kinda breaks up your flow. On a mountain a least you have a decent run of it in one hit.

Have fun though, and good luck!

Cheers, I do wanna work on my basics, may get bored, but then again practice makes perfect.

Oh one other con that i didn;t mention with 2 cats and a dog, theres the additional cost of cattery/kennels at 23 per day, its not cheap to send them away, afterall there is a recession on ya know.

I recommend a dry slope.

Seriously!

I rode my local dry hill twice a week for 2 hours each time for like 3 months and made a lot of progress before my next holiday abroad. I found the dry slope really hard to ride and pretty unforgiving, but it makes you progress! At the end of my first week long learning holiday I was just about doing blues and tried a very short red.

By the time I rolled around to going abroad and on snow again, I found turning etc a lot easier than on the dry slope. Obviously there's the added factors, such as snow condition, gradient/angle etc but I found turning etc a lot easier and was riding mostly reds for the week, as my confidence was massively boosted.

It might even be cheaper? Not as cool as being on snow, but it's been working for me (progression wise), so I'd recommend it! Obviously, these are the opinions of someone else who's pretty new to the sport.

Shame you couldn't make it to scotland, the conditions are amazing at the moment - it's like going abroad! There's actually some good cheap hotels and bunkhouses and hostels aswell, and you'll get a day pass at the resort for the price of a few hours at Chill factor.

Still, there's lots of other stuff to do in manchester and around so I guess it has it's benefits.

I'm hoping to get back up to Scotland for another weekend or two before the snow goes! Smile

Day 3 complete, my knees are a bit sore, but really enjoying my time. Have improved more than I imagined I would, I feel that I can confidently link turns (still a bit nervous on toe edges).
Tried a bit of fakey too, but had a big fall, and think i will try that later.

also once at the bottom of the main slope, goign slowly, trying a few mini jumps, and managed a 180(ish) god I was sooooooo happy bout that!

Sounds like you're going great. I found that after the first couple of 2hr sessions I had you've more or less figured out how it wall works so it kinda falls into place...the rest is just confidence and experience really. I'm far happier on my heel edge still, but have recently taken to using the toe edge more to stop from big speeds just to get the feel for it. Occasionally I'm over but hey, that's how you learn.

Are you taking lessons for the full time you are there? I've not personally, though luckily my brother can board so he taught me the basics one quiet evening and from there I've just kinda worked it out. Wasn't any of this slip-sliding, falling leaf etc stuff people keep taking about though....'man up bro' I think he said Smile

No lessons, just 5 hours of practice a day.
Feeling really confident on both edges and doing turns, already started practicing ollies and 180s.

Had to give today a miss though, after 4 straight days (with sod all excercise for about 2 years prior) my knees are really aching, although having enough confidence to take knee pads off I found I used less energy than when wearing them (although could just be i'm being more efficient on the board)

init you coulda gone on a last minute europe break all in for that price! i agree though with tortyv it gets abit borin after about hour and a half i've been goin cf aswell this month, i end up racin the skiers down in a slalom when i get bored lol, Go weds thurs fri nights from 6pm the parks open, I don't get how you managed to spend so much though the 2.5hour passes are only 20 quid how much practice do you need in a week!? I know you wana progress but any good boarder/skier/skater/biker etc knows when to call it a day twitchy lil aches and pains are better than permanent ones.
Man you shoulda went scotland though, You coulda jumped on the train to aviemore from manchester, it takes ages but is worth it, you would have had so much more fun and you got the freedom of the whole mountain and park(when its built) aswell as lookin down onto that beautiful valley but that furnicular is a lil scary! and yeah the accomodation is pretty expensive unless you stay in youth hostel which is a better option if your goin strictly to learn.
Also, Why did you buy a board straight away man! lol actually your abit like me when i started i was proper hyped but half the stuff i got i wish i never did because when i started ridin more i developed my own ridin style i wasn't interested then in the hype of certain trends goin around with boards, clothes etc.
