Personally I'd go with something that's got a spike or a bobble/ball ontop for more grip. Positioning wise, maybe just strp into your board pretend to do a few skating motions and then put your foot back on the board as if you were gliding along (without looking until after you put it back on). That'll show you where you naturally place your foot and thus where you want the grip.
Spatially, once you've found the area you need them in, just put them in whatever pattern you like that covers as much of the area where your boot sole will be in contact with the base.

I've got some Burton studs which have little spikes on them. I think I got about 6 got £10 and arranged them where my boot goes. They're just silver studs, so totally inoffensive.
Stuck on perfectly and been there for 2 years without moving!

Dakine do some great spikey type ones , i got a few while over in Bansko mega cheap ...about 3 quid a pop
