Ive never been so annoyed about an article, one this thing is to raise awarness if there is a serious issue but this is just not backing the youths we have...and a good size of their audience !!

The hook of it is all is that they reckon,
mothers are too pushy
Young kids have a bad attitude
Youths with sponsor take money away from the adult athletes
Shop sponsors ar wasting their money
youths shouldnt have websites

Any parent who has a child who is passionate about a sport no matter what t is, will support that child if it makes them happy.

Ive not seen pushy mothers, sometimes dads going mad because they havnt done a trick they know they can do. !! but this is also seen in swimming, running, dancing etc, every child needs this why is ski and snowboarding any different??

If FOTP is so concerned about youths and the fact that it is all wrong, then the following should happen

NO MORE INTERVIEWS OR FILMING OF YOUTHS BETWEEN 9-14

Get off you soap box and leave these kids alone, I know especially down south, we do not want you filming our kids anymore!!!

The Youth Category is our future lets start backing them and supporting them no matter how good or bad they are, one could be a pro, one could become an editor, but either way they do not need to read articles like yours!!

This was written by Sean Miller, who's good mates with Laura Berry. I've known Laura since she was competing at 12, when people like TheBoarder, Dense Clothing and Bucks Boarding were right behind her.

It's an odd attitude and a rant at pushy parents rather than the riders themselves I think. I financially support my son's football team, not because they're good (they're actually bottom of the league), but because I want him to enjoy his football. Both my kids swim at county level. They wouldn't have been that good without us behind them - and yes, that includes forcing them to go swimming instead of watching TV or being on MSN. Daughter is grade 8 violin at 14 - same applies. Pushy, supportive or making sure the kids realise some of their potential?

It's all about balance - there are parents out there who are far too pushy and there are kids out there who have an enormously over-inflated sense of their own importance/ability. But there are also a load of sensible parents who want to encourage their kids and see them reach their potential. Focusing on the inflammatory is standard journalism. It has to be said, a nice, well-balanced article would have gone unnoticed.

(For what it's worth, having experienced several children in the 9-14 range at various indoor slopes over the last week, I can honestly say a fair few of them displayed no sense of modesty or humility. Snaking queues for lifts and kickers, spraying people with snow, flipping fingers and swearing if you got in the way of their videoed run. Nice attitude from our stars of tomorrow. Or so they told me they would be.)

Sean Miller's articles are generally fairly tongue in cheek...

I wrote to Seam Miller privately as soon as this came out, making many points and giving reasons with each, along with questions , the reply was a copout and not worthy of a reply even though I wanted to send one.

The argument about kids thinking we all owe them something, is completely different to kids snaking que's, even my lad (Tomski) gets told off for this, and only hops on the lifts when he has been given permission, but others may not be aware of this, and if someone thought he was behaving in a wrong manner or even heard swearing , I would like to know, because one thing I wont tolerate is disrespectful behaviour.

I totally agree with Dunx and had the same conversation with a friend the other day, anyone who wishes to take any sport forward needs a supportive family and yes sometimes this means making them go training instead of hanging it out with friends....

The article for me didnt raise good or bad publicity on the sport but a total disregard for the efforts the kids put in and the dedication and sacrifices made by some parents to ensure their kids are first and formost happy and given every chance of achieving their goals.

figureitout - if you see mine behaving like that please come and tell me x

This does need to be read in context. Read the rest of the Jibberish articles, which is what Seans little blog on FoTP was called and you will see that its not all bad at all.

Its even called Jibberish!

Hmm I agree with this - a child should be a child..... not living on vodka and pro-plus on the weekends whilst traveling around the country with people 10 years older! Although best years of my life, probably better to have had those experiences at 18, not 14/15.

Snowboarding made me grow up too fast and I feel sorry for kids who get to 12 years old and only have that to show for their lives so far - kids shouldn't have their own websites and sponsors putting pressure on them during their school years.

Why shouldnt they have a website??? kids are encouraged at school to do media and this can only enhance there school work, and literacy FACT

Kids Sponsors.... No pressure is sought by any sponsor at this age group and K2 for one say they dont want nothing more than a child to be happy riding and conducting themselves in a respectful manner

And i think you will find that most kids have more than one hobbie, and are encouraged too because most of them if allowed would live , breath and sleep snowboarding.

why shouldn't they Gina??

surely using online media to market a product (themselves) using good English comprehension, understanding html and computer skills like logging key wording for google bots to pick up, and their building a great amount of social skills it's a good thing as most of us have to learn later in life...

these "kids" are learning that to get free stuff from sponsors you have to put some effort back in, something a lot of older riders still haven't realised... there's no such thing as a freeride.

i rode (well he rode i tried to keep up) with Jake "the snake" Terry last saturday.. something i haven't had chance to do since he switched from 2 planks, and he's super stoked on riding, he's having loads of fun competing at the level he is at, but trying to learn new tricks, he's performing well at school and is socially well adjusted, and can mix with adults and kids without problems.... and as for pushy parents.. i joined them in the bar when i got knackered!!

and yeah he snakes the odd line and can be a cheeky bugger..but what 12/13 year old isn't???... and i'm sure his mum and dad would rather be supporting him riding rather than hanging around hemel bus station drinking diamond white and smoking B&H!!

but then again... i knocked up his blogsite so maybe i'm to blame

check it out at http://jaketerry.co.uk Wink

oh and a couple of years ago Jamie Nicholls was one of these 14 year old with a pile of sponsors etc.... wonder what he's up to these days?? Razz

that all said i believe that there are some new riders who are completely flash in the pan, getting sponsors on hype and will fade away.... but that will always happen in a scene as small as ours.

i still think some of the UK's best riders don't get as much recognition as they deserve because they're not very good at self promotion... and that works the other way as well

hey whatever i'm sure fotp's hit rate will be up this week Very Happy

Fair enough - are these kids making their own websites by the way?

I think I meant to say don't take a hobby too far, too young.

It's just personal opinion anyway.

i doubt it Gina, but they're adding to their blogs and uploading pictures and stuff

they haven't got time to conquer full website design.. otherwise they'll end up as web geeks like dunx rather than rad shredders like Sean!!
