For backflips I found the way to get over that fear is to repeat, repeat, repeat on an airbag practising straightening and tucking to slow or speed up the rotation until I was sure I could do them every time. Then I manned up for a kicker in the summer park in L2A and went for it.
As for front flips, I just threw myself off cat tracks into powder until I stuck one! I find there are a lot less consequences when you screw up a front flip.
I'm trying to muster the balls to try to rodeo again, last go I caught an edge on take off, just managed to squirm my way around from landing on my head to landing on my chest and bust 2 ribs. Takes a lot to get back on the horse with that sort of thing. |

The point I was going to make and then forgot ( ) is that you should be confident, if you have doubts then you're likely to panic and bail. the same applies with most things I suppose. |

Its pretty much a case of 'manning up' if you can already pull them off in certain conditions. But I know where you're coming from. When something about the same trick changes, its like taking that huge leap of faith all over again to pull it off.
What might be helpful (tho I'm no flip expert... yet!) is to find fellow flipping company. When you see other people around you pulling nollie fronts or straight backs on the same intended spot (kicker/lip etc), then it kinda gives you extra confidence to give it a shot yourself.
That helped me at an Onyx freestyle day when one of the instructors (Adam) pulled off a nollie front off a green-ish kicker. Made me attempt that barrel roll, which I knew I was capable of due to prior experiences (standing back-tuck party trick =D). I didn't quite make the first attempt [scratches the scar that's still on the nose...] but coz I had just 'committed', the confidence stayed in me and I was able to head straight back up and land my 2nd second attempt. (Quite chuffed that both attempts were caught on film ^_^)
Anyways, hope this helps.

For back flips, look for a jump that has more upward kick to it as this will pitch you in the right direction. For front flips, definitely get them nailed on cat tracks before bringing them to jumps.
The best advice with inverts is: commit |

I'd be up for a hemel airbag session too. What's the best way to find out when it's on?
Cheers,

Not heard anything about airbags this year yet, just keep an eye out.
I forgot to mention this before, a really important thing with backflips is to pop into them. Don't just lean back on take off, that's how you crack your head on the end of the kicker. You'll also be 10 times more in control. |
