Ah i've edited this post so many times, gonna do one final edit =p
They have a good snowdome though, infact, they have a SLOPE, ours is an indoor Snow mound
ExampleUK slope: Milton Keynes
Cost: £31 for 2 Hours
Slope length: 160 Metres
Number of slopes: 2 [and 1 learning slope]
Lifts: 2 Poma lifts
vs
Landgraaf indoor slope
Cost: 40 Euros for 8 hours
Slope length: Longest 525 metres
Number of slopes: 5
Lifts: 8 lifts, one of them being a 6 person chairlift |

They are also connected to other more mountainous countries where they train.
Plus also the Dutch goverment / Olympic comitee belives in their atheletes and backs them 100%
I was living in Holland during the 2006 Olympics and they went made for the speed skating. Winter Olympics is a big thing over there |

Haha you been on google Sidge!!!!!!!!!
It;s a good point, out lottry funding is shocking. Read ome where in total winterport funding makes up 1% of all our athletes fundings for all sport. The whoever it was just went bust before Olympics!!!!
The BOA said they were happy with Olympic performance as it bettered four years previous. That statement true. However a target of 3 medals, 3 of which in curling and they failed miserably despite the curlers becoming full time athletes.
The basic fact is, we need to offer more fundig to our athletes, despite everyones thoughts on Canada's own the podium capaign, it has worked. Funding to the guys and girls they thought had real real good chances has come right up, moguls, skeleton (Hollingsworth blew it), bobsleigh, curling, short track/long track speed skating.
The UK gov needs to look into this, we have no long track ice rink, although Steve Redgrave has said he wants to build one. We need to back our guys to the hilt otherwise we have no one there.
I dread to think what will happen in London!!!! |

Well yeah Google was used, knew of Landgraaf and that it was much larger / cheaper than the UK slopes (was a good thread on the Landgfraag slope on SCUK a few years ago) just wanted to get the facts exact
Search engines - Good for searching. True story. |

I originally thought this, but to be honest an extra 2-5 million would help our winter olympic teams, we're in well over 50 billion debt IIRC, the country needs an entire reform, rather than small budget cuts |

What they need is a plan.
British Cycling got one sorted out, went from virtually bugger all funding to 12(?) million quid, and then proceeded to clean up at the olympics. Took 6-8 years mind.
Athletics gets similar amounts of funding but only managed to pick up a couple of medals (no real plan y'see).
The lottery bods want medals, not "going to take part", or "going for the experience". They don't give money to people for the hell of it.
So the snowboarding (and skiing) NGBs need realistic long term plans to get athletes onto the podium.
Which at the moment, they haven't got. |

| Couldn't agree more, lets hope with BSA taking control of the snow boading we can see an improvement with the funding. |

| it's not really about whether we have an indoor slope, same as Holland. If you think about it a Brit won a gold medal in skeleton, and I can't think of too many sliding centres in the UK! |

I wouldn't hold my breath for that, some of the well established sports with HUGE memberships in the NGB are still flailing around in the dark ages as far as management, funding structures, coaching structures etc go.
Athletics, massive budget, couldn't organise a pi55 up in a brewery. Three medals, and the one (?) gold that they do get is from a suspected doper, coached/managed by a known doper. I'd laugh if it wasn't so depressing.
Sailing and rowing managed better, with (from what i can recall) relatively small budgets.
You need good professional managers, accountants, coaches and technical staff. Not badly paid staff or unpaid volunteers doing it out of the goodness of their hearts.
If you see what i mean. |
