After a few days search for a new board, ive narrowed my search down to a few boards. I have an alright budget to spend, but really was just wondering what the fuss over having a reverse camber style board was. I understand turning and "floating" becomes easier. But is the extra money worth it if im not going to be spending alot of time riding freestyle. I enjoy it, but also enjoy just general riding.

I do want something that has pop, and after riding with an 07 season board for a wee while, and seeing people with boards with alot of flex, i fancy getting one that isnt as stiff as my rather rubbish stepchild (its an ok board for the budget i had).

I had narrowed it down to:
Forum scallywag
Libtech banana
Burton Custom v-rocker
Burton Jeremy Jones
K2 www rocker

Are there others out there that are good, with the ability to live up to a whole days all mountain and then ride just as well in park? I know there are lots of pages dealing with board choice already. But none of them dealed directly with the issue of if getting a board with this new fangled reverse camber is worth it.

I class myself as an intermediate level, my riding is nothing special, but also not bad. Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.
Smile

Stolen from somewhere else a while ago:-

Quote:
What is Rocker? There are three ingredients snowboard shape:

Camber – Camber is the traditional shape for skis and snowboards. Camber is a slight arching upward curve with the bend or curve upward in the middle. Camber provides excellent turn initiation and handling on on-piste slopes.

Rocker – Rocker (also called reverse-camber) is just as it sounds – camber turned upside down. This term is borrowed from watersports where rocker is common. neither camber nor flat. Reverse camber snowboards offer superior float in the powder and are best when used for backcountry, big mountain powder riding.

Flat – Flat is often found between the tip and the tail of the ski/snowboard. It is horizontally level or even. The base is flat like a pancake.

These three properties: camber, rocker, and flat are combined in a variety of ways to create an array of choices for snowboarders.

Important note - You will hear rocker referred to many ways, including but not limited to: reverse camber, inverse camber, banana, early rise, s-rocker, gull wing, three stage rocker, negative camber, R.C. Technology, Rocker 6, elf shoe, chilly dog etc

So where is the rocker? – Rocker technology differs by manufacturer as well as type of snowboard. Rocker in snowboards may be located in the tip and/or tail. Many snowboard feature some medley of rocker, flat, and cambered sections to achieve the desired ride. You will find boards with one of these or all three.

Why is rocker so awesome? What does it do for you?

- Rocker offers increased float in the powder! – With rocker, your tips will float up in powder and crud. The feel is smooth and just like when you surf, wakeboard or waterski, rocker helps you to stay on top of the snow. On a snowboard, your tip sits up higher out of the snow so you can avoid those face plants over your nose. Since your tips are already in an upward position you are able to maintain a more balanced riding stance and you don’t have to lean back to float as you do on a traditional shaped snowboard.

- Rocker is more maneuverable - Rocker technology moves the contact points on the board, basically shortening your effective edge. Your ride becomes more nimble and maneuverable, which allows you to pivot more easily and you’ll no longer catch edges like crazy. You can slash the snow, slide sideways to scrub speed, smear and butter turns. Turning more quickly works great when you are in the trees.

- Rocker makes park riding a dream - With rocker technology your board is pre-pressed which makes riding presses in the park easier. Lock onto and slide rails with rocker boards. You can actually hit the butter box with style since your ride is less catchy. The less catchiness nature of the board allows you to initiate your spins early and gives you greater ability to recover more easily from off axis landings.

Who should/can ride rockered snowboards?

Everyone can ride rockered snowboards and have fun. That is a beautiful thing about rocker technology. You can be a beginner or advanced rider, young or old, and benefit from riding rocker snowboard. Rocker is an easier and more fun ride. Just remember there are many variations in rocker type, go with the style that will fit the type of riding you want to do.

Where does rocker technology excel on the mountain?

There are a variety of different blends of rocker technology available on snowboards that excel specifically in certain conditions – everywhere from pipe and park to hard pack or the deepest powder.

If you're not going to be doing a lot of freestyle then I think you need to be looking at all mountain freestyle/twin boards rather than out and out freestyle boards. I've ridden and can recommend the K2 Believer, Salomon Grip and Never Summer SL-R. There are a lot of choices in this category though.

cheers for the help. Yeah i have a latchkey, its soo stiff. Only got it cause it was £115 on sale.
I want something that bends a wee bit as i want to get into more freestyle riding, just need to find a decent night that they have rookie lines out, or see about getting lessons for some tips.
I think TSA still sell a couple of YES boards, i just didnt even think to consder them. Il go see them and see if i can demo before i buy rather than doing the old internet job of just review and buy. See what they feel like to ride.
Yeah, i had considered getting an all mountain, i just want something kinda versatile, but i suppose as my freestyle skills are limited, then im guessing an all mountain will do the job for the basics and probably alot of the intermediate stuff too.

Ur serious? Stepchild say the latchkey is there softest board? I dont wanna see the other ones then. But i get really confused about stiffness and that wether like 2 on a stiffness rating is solid or if 6 is bendy. Plus if its better to have a stiff board or a bendy board (i understand its from what riding u wanna do, but whats best for what?)

Ahh nice one, will need to get ma self over for that, break a few things. Lol, cheers, might take u up on that offer.

low is softer.
what size is it? it may be way too big for you if thats why its stiff

you want stiff for going fast, soft for slow/learning/rails

Its a 159, Im 6'2 and bought it when i was just over 16stone, so it was alright back then. But im now about 12 stone ish. If i was gonna get a new one it would be around the 157 mark.
I was up at breahead the night, for dinner with the girl friend and dragged her into TSA, had a look round and a wee chat, i kinda fancy the YES Twin rocker.
