OK so following on from the Iran thread can we discuss riding other bizarre places.

As always i'm going to take my annual shred trip this winter and am looking for that "WTF WERE YOU THINKING OF?" idea.

So where is the "craziest" place you can think of snowboarding (except Antarctica)....?

Greece has got about 20 resorts and several peaks over 4000 metres. They get a sh*t load of snow as well. One of the only places in the world where you can sideways slide in the morning and sit on the beach in the afternoon. My wifes family have a house in the Pelaponese mountains 45 minutes from the resort of Kalavryta and two hours from Athens, going riding there this year for the first time but been up there loads of times in the summer, it contains the spring where Achillies was dipped in to make him immortal (if you're into that sort of thing). Pernassos is the biggest resort also 2 hours from Athens

The biggest resorts are further north nearer the boarder with macedonia. Driven up there twice, most beautifull mountains i've been too and completely secluded from the modern outside world. Going to be driving though that way again in a couple of weeks. People dont expect a country as hot as greece to have snow in the middle of the summer when its 40 degrees at the beach.

There are loads of videos on youtube about it

Switzerland ? Razz

Not sure u can get that much more badass than India, Gulmargh is the ski resort there with i think the world highest cable car... its also in the highly disputed province of Kashmir, an Army training facility and a whole bunch of people were killed there in a grenade attack not too long ago - its on the UK gov's 'don't go' list.

A good friend of mine did a month in Kashmir a couple of years ago and said it was awesome. There was only one gondola up the mountain which a little "old" however the powder was amazing. What's more is that there are NO pistes. Imagine that, a gondola up and nothing but powder! I wish I went with her, however I was too busy getting drunk at the top on the mountain in Austria Wink

Not too far away but you could try Bosnia - biggest resort is probably Bjelašnica where they had the Mens alpine ski events for the 1984 Winter Olympics. Rebuilt most of it since the war, but you can still see the bullethole riddled ski-jump in neighbouring Ignman. Its only 20mins drive from Sarajevo as well - you'll certainly get a reaction if you tell people you took a couple of weeks off work to go to Sarajevo! (which btw is actually quite a nice place and definitely worth visiting) My girlfriend is Bosnian so I'll probably get there myself at some point this winter.

I had no idea Greece had snow! haha.

There are quite a lot of very unknown countries and resorts it seems! If they just put some major parks in and got sponsored they would go huge!

Yeah I was speaking to some people who went to Kashmir, they said they would go again in a heartbeat. It sounds absolutely brilliant but I guess if you are going to travel all that way you need to go for at least a couple of weeks sliding...

Goddamnit I really need to quit my job. Mad

I had no idea about Greece! That is just mad! The only times I've been there all I have ever seen is 30C+ rocky desert and beaches.

I've heard good things about Russia. I have to say I think in my opinion the craziest place to go riding in the world would be the Kamchatka peninsula. No lifts, all helisliding on dormant volcanoes. I think chopper trips run about £500 per hour so I guess its out of my price range unfortunately...
...unless anyone on here has a chopper license and fancies a trip next year??

There are quiet a lot of Active volcanos u can board on in Kamchatka - its highly seismical active tho huge landslides, avis and other nastyness are common place... sounds like a proper trip tho... something i put on my planning schedule a few years back and will continue to research till i got the skills and cash to make it a worthwhile trip.

The cost of £500 per hour is for the heli rental, which hold 10+ people (as many as 20 on the big russian birds ) so not quiet so bad if u split that 10 ways - still not cheap - and the heli's i seen flying out there are old cold war birds, so your kinda taking your life in your hands just getting on board one imo.
