Post subject: San Fran Airport to Heavenly any ideas????

Hi All,
I've got flights and digs sorted for Heavenly at the end of Jan.
Sadly I have no idea how to get there. I know the route to get there but don't really want to hire a car if I can help it.
Has anyone else out there travelled that route by bus, train...if so how easy is it.
Any recomendations would be great.

I did that trip by car, and it isn't that much of a trek. Probably about 4hrs I reckon. Obviously cos we hired a car I don't know much about the public transport. I'm sure you could geta greyhound across there or something!
But, I'd recommend hiring a car, then you can get between the Tahoe resorts easily. There's a lot more than just heavenly, and I'd say you'd get bored of just riding there. You've got about 10 resorts within an hours drive round the lake and its worth exploring. My fave was Homewood on the west banks of Tahoe - small family run atmosphere, excellent terrain, nice park, cheap lift tickets etc |

| I've also done that trip by car, thought it was a good drive, especially the latter parts in the mountains. It was only our second boarding holiday, and we stayed at Heavenly and didn't find it boring, but I guess if you are an experienced rider then Ace's idea of exploring the other resorts would be a good one. I loved it there and would go back there in a shot. Enjoy....... |

greyhound coach or train is probably your best. Im not too sure about south lake but you can definitely get a train/greyhound to Truckee. Or you could get a cheap internal flight to Reno and bus it down to south lake?
But yeah the drive is actually pretty good, 4-5 hours tops, and the majority of that is on the freeway which is just straight! Plus if you have a car it will give you a lot more freedom to explore the rest of the area, which is a must! |

I think it's something like 200 miles from San Fran to Heavenly.
Your best bet would be to go on the heavenly website and have a look. Most resorts have a 'getting here' section which may have some helpful advice. |

Thanks for all the feedback. I've looked into a number of routes, all of which led me to the conclusion that I'm better off hiring a car.
In case anyone is interested there is a Hertz at Harveys Hotel Resort more or less in Heavenly. It makes it less costly to hire at San Fran Ariport and drop the car there. Big 4x4 is only £90 for 24 hours which actually works out less than the flights from San Fran to Reno.

Good call on the 4by4 you will need it,if its snowing,snow chains will be strictly inforced over the pass into South Lake Tahoe.
I was there last year,enjoyed it alot,there are daily buses to Sierra At Tahoe,Kirkwood and Squaw Valley,so you have other options if you get bored of Heavenly |

Sadly, hiring a car is really the only good way of getting from SF to South Lake Tahoe.
Their is a train/bus combo with Amtrak but it is really a pain (it only leaves once a day & is much longet than driving).
If you are renting a car in South Lake I recomend calling Avis. The lady who works their is very nice. |

we went by car and the best way to go.it dont take that long in all fairness but it all about having a laff on the way road trip style.i cant see it being any fun cramped up on a big slow bus.
so drive you know it the best and most fun way lol.

i flew to reno... then limo to tahoe
but hired a ute once there but didnt always use it busses are free so can get to ns etc on them pretty easy. enjoy |
