Ok guys and girls.. I need to settle an arguement and what better way than with the help of SCUK...
When riding the mountains of Europe in the winter, do you guys where thermals/base layer or whatever you want to call it? I tend to but the other half says they are "gay". Who is correct? You decide... |

I normally take a couple sets of themal base layers when I'm on the mountain.
Depending on the weather, if it's not too cold and the sun is out, I just wear snowboard jacket and pants, with a t-shirt underneath.
For colder days, I'll add a thermal top underneath my t-shirt, (my legs stay warm enough what with the snowboard socks, knee pads and impact shorts).......but on mega cold days, i'll have thermals top and bottom, plus a fleece top under my jacket. |

| I tend to always wear my thermals, force of habit now I think. Nothing gay about that! |

| The helly hansen stuff is ok but it gets a bit smelly, merino base layers ftw! I nearly always have a base layer on top, because as the saying goes: Cotton kills. |

| I tend to wear a base layer just so I can keep my other clothes for the evenings and can therefore pack lighter. They are gay though, but in black look really good especially with a balaclava to match. |

I wear very thin HH long johns and board shorts, but always ride with my vents open on my pants, not sure why, but always have.
Top half I used to wear a tee, mid layer - could be a hoody if its cold or a thin layer if not so cold and my shell jacket.
After doing my shoulder in I have to now wear a long sleeve tee under my big shoulder brace a hockey or american football shirt over the top of that and my jacket, but if its really cold another layer. |

I always wear a Merino base layer on the top with a t-shirt over it then jacket. I'll add a gilet, micro-fleece, or hoodie depending on how cold it is.
Bottoms are thermals + Burton cargo pants.
I suspect folk saying "just t-shirt and jacket" are talking about boarding in the Alps in March. I've been down to -35 in the Rockies and I'm glad I was wearing more than a t-shirt! |
