Hi,
Seen a lot of posts here about seasons in fernie, Banff & Whistler etc. but not many that address my questions, hope you guys can help.
I usually ride in Europe with my mates during February through April, but this December (12th) i'm looking for a week in Canada with my girlfriend. So i'm looking for a resort that is:
- best chance of good snow in Dec, i've heard whislter gets the weather off the Pacific and has pretty good snow.
- Our level is good intermediates, mostly cruising about but some 'baby' park.
- Not too keen on the idea of the buses to the lifts in Banff but its not the end of the world.
- Cost isn't too much of an issue (within reason ) looking for a nice week away with my girlfriend with the added bonus of some hopefully awesome boarding.
Am considering Delta Whistler and Marriott Blackcomb.
Any advice would be cool[/list] |

| Whistler has pretty much everything you listed. As for hotels, the Marriott is pretty good and its ski in and out which is nice. |

Whistler is normally the first to open in Canada, just because it sounds good for them.
Last season it opened around Nov 22nd. Like Gav said last season the start of the season was very poor and not a lot was open.
If I was you I would wait and see where has good snow and get a last min deal somewhere. |

This year Lake Louise is opening on 8th November. What usually happens is LL puts a date down, then depending on snow levels the other two resorts (Sunshine and Norquay) open either a few days before or after.
As mentioned above I'd recommend one of the Banff resorts as an early season option due to it being further north and therefore on average being more snowsure.
There's a nice little village in Lake Louise with a number of hotels and youth hostels depending on your budget. The skiing is awesome and you stand a chance of scoring early season champagne powder. Plus it's got a really well set up park.
At Sunshine there is one pretty average Hotel - wouldn't recommend staying there.

Not sure about the snow in Dec but Tremblant is practically ski to the door and is great for intermediates. Might be worth looking to the east, shorter flight times. |

With Whistler, the time you are looking at will be extremley quiet, infact the end of November and Start of December is probably the quietest the resort is all season. Due to it being early season people won't be taking holidays, especially in the run up to Xmas and a lot of new staff will be being trained up in their new positions.
It's also unlikely that the high Alpine lifts will be open, except maybe on weekends. My first season there was during the terrible season back in 04/05 when it mostly rained all season, and even so they still have grommers open at that stage.
Realistictly, if you come out for a week at that time, don't expect any high alpine or a proper park. It's a long way to go otherwise. |

I wouldnt like to guess how much terrain whistler will have open.. Usually the whole mountain is open by xmas and all the upper lifts (which is where all the good riding is) are open by mid December. Both the hotels you mentioned are good I would probably go for the delta peronally as you are right in the village and its much more convenient for restaurants and bars in the evening but the marriot has the advantage for being ride in ride out!
If I was you going on your holiday that time of year I would watch the weather forecast and book last minute to where ever has the best snow! |

Lake Louise was feicking freezing -17c in the village! not much snow up there yet and did'nt see any snow making going on.Banff has more snow at the moment,Could'nt imagine trying to ride up around there when there is'nt much snow, would be icy and cold... But the area is unriveled in beauty |
