i am heading to NZ for their next season and was wondering if anyone else was planning on doing this? i need to find a good resort to spend my season and was also hoping for some travel buddies as its always more fun when there's more people. even if your not planning on going to NZ any new boarding buddies are welcome (im in edinburgh) or if you have done a season in NZ and have any advice it would be very welcome Smile

We just did the middle of the 09 season which was great.
The resort are all pretty small though (4 lifts is good!) so I would say try and mix it up as much as you can or you'll get bored with just one or two.

Near Wanaka you've got snow park which is an awesome massive park. If you need lessons on the park you can join a group lesson pretty cheap and the instructors up there are really good - my girlfriend had a (ski) lesson and was throwing 180s off the big kickers after 30 mins, which neither of us was expecting (not that I'm saying she's normally a wuss in the park)!
Cadrona also has a good big park although it's busier. It has decent pistes although none of them are too challenging, but you can get some good off-piste there.

There's a hitching point for these two at the edge of town and loads of people stop and give you lifts coz the transport up there is pricey if you don't have your own car.

Also near Wanaka is Treble Cone - if you hire a Jucy car or campervan you get a free lift pass for every day of your carhire, although it's only really worth going up there if they have some powder. The runs are a bit boring and there's not much of a park and if you don't have the free lift pass deal it's expensive.

Near Queenstown, the Remarkables have good off-piste (if there's any powder) and two good parks which are fairly quiet, they alllso give you free transport up the mountain with your lift pass.
Coronet Peaks has a lot more skiers and no park but the pistes are pretty good. Some boarders really don't like it but I thought it was cool for a couple of days.

Then you have the club fields (Cragieburn, Broken River) - these are run on a almost non-profit basis by a club. Members pay to join and their money goes towards the mountain lodges and the lifts and they work and help on the mountain and with admin etc etc. If you're visiting you pay a bit more for your day.
The fun starts when you get to the lifts - 'nut crackers' are the most uncomfortable and ridiculous way to get up a mountain I've ever seen, but it's a cheap way of doing it and it means beginners don't go there coz they can't get on the lift.
Some of the fields are never pisted so if there's powder they are great. Go to a couple of them just for the experience - they are really friendly and interesting! If you hire a Spaceship campervan, they were doing free ski days at the club fields.

Have a wicked time!

Alright...

Me and a friend are going to be doing a season in Q-town this summer!!...

In terms of getting a job we cant leave till mid June, and all the mountain jobs seem to start traing in early June, so thats out the window.

Does anyone know of any good bars / restautrants I could get in contact with before we go in order to try and bag a job off the bat!!

Or maybe just if it's easy or hard to rock up and get a job!!

If you've been before just give me a run down so i can get even more excited Very Happy...

1stly Early bird season passes are on sale till the 11. 12 hours time or so. Get one. It's about half the price. I always get the queenstown pass, for remarks and C. peak. You'll want the transport add-on too. AS it's the easiest way to get to the mountain.

I'm here now and have a job, but coming here in june you'll find it harder. Basically just CV drop everywhere. There are 3 job agencies, sign up there too. No point in doing anything before you get here, wont work. Be prepared to go 4weeks with no work. It might happen. But look at it like you can ride for 4 weeks every day.

Can help with anything you need. Just reach me and i'll answer any Q's for you.

We've decided just to get the Remarkables ski pass, gives me a chance to hit the park a bit more when I get bored, and I defs need to practise there!!

So you don't think theres much point in trying to get work before we leave then, saves me putting sh1t loads of effort into that then Very Happy... In terms of work, once I have my visa thats about it right!!... Although I hear on the grapevine that a National Insurance type number is required as well!!

Ha, yeah I guess 4 weeks of no work can't be too much of a bad thing!!... Might have to cut down on the old expendatures though!!, go sobre!!

You need an IID number. Just have to go to the post office and fill in a form, then go back a week or so later and use the free-phone phone their to call up and get it. You'll need a bank account too, but just go into ANZ in town, it takes 5 mins to setup and you're sorted.

Erm, not really. It's all about face action here. And their are so many people here looking for jobs going into places, you'd get ignored really. Just CV dropping everywhere and speaking to the manager etc. So you could do some before, but i wouldn't bother, just bring a stack of up to date CV's with you and go hand them out when you get here.

Spent last summer in NZ in a camper van going all over the place which i can thoroughly recommend. We had the NZski pass for mt hutt, c.peak and remarks, and that was quality. it's worth getting up to some of the smaller resorts like ohau and porters because on their day, there's some awesome riding to be had! if money's tight in qt try to avoid fergburger, its sooo good! and if you cave then don't get chips!!

I did 09 season in Queenstown, was fecking awesome. I've considered going back this year, to one of the smaller fields like Ohau, but it is mega isolated.

Like most I went to QT with a fat load of CVs and good intentions. My bubble soon burst when I realised there were several hundred peope in QT also competing for the very small amount of jobs available. All the lads with trades were fine, there was a big need for builders, chippies, plumbers last year. Us degree lot were screwed, no-one wanted to know about our Microsoft office abilites or our budget managment experience!

I basically went without work for the whole season. I cleaned campers for jucy for a while and I fliered a bit which kept me going, but apart from that I just used ALL of my savings. It was worth it though! I got by through knowing people basically. I volunteered for loads of stuff like the winter festival and film festival and got awesome perks from that. Like free ski pass for the season, a house (albeit a sofa), booze, VIP tickets to loads of NZski events like the railjams. SO yeah I was a scab!

Basically be massively prepared NOT to get a job. I reckon the season cost me 3K. This inculded a massive stint of travelling around the rest of NZ, so I think I did pretty well. I didn't hold back on the booze or food or anything either.

Next thing you have to plan is where you are going to live. Before I went I read there was a massive shortage of places, but there actually seemed to be constant adverts for rooms and houses. You need to weigh up whether you want a room, or if you can hostel it for the whole time. Loads of people hostel it, but it is sh1t. DON'T GO NEAR BASE IT SUCKS.

Check out www.lwb.co.nz for rooms, jobs, other random bits and pieces. This will basically be your bible while you are in QT.

Hey guys

I'm going to NZ at the end of april with my girlfriend, for the season. I am also looking for any info people can give.

I was hoping to get a job as an instructor, but after applying everywhere I've been knocked back from them all (cadrona said they had 450 applicants so I guess competition is stiff).

As I don't have a job I'm willing to do anything. I'm a spark by trade, if there are any other sparks that can give me any advice on work there, it would be appreciated.

I think we're going to wanaka because the cheap passes have already gone at queens town. I have no idea which mountain to get a season pass for?????????????? ANY ADVICE

would be cool to meet some new people so we will see some of you out there Smile

I'm an expat and live in Queenstown and Wanaka and have been for the last 3 yrs. I usually work at Cardrona for the winter season but wont be teaching this season. Just wanna ride TBH and be based in Queentown. QT has a younger vibe during the winter and be warned it will take your money with all the clubs and bars. Coronet and Remarkables are pretty good local ski fields when the snow is good. I prefer the Wanaka vibe as its more low key and more ski, snowboard orientated and a good place to network for ski field jobs if any. Cardrona really picked up the pace last season with an epic park and pipe set up holding most southern hemi comps. Snow park sadly due to the financial situation suffered and was pretty poor in terms of condition and maintenance. Treble cone is steep and is on when its dumping but a seasson there is not ideal. IMHO i think anyone seeking a season in QT and Wanaka will not be disappointed with whatever ski field they ride...... As for jobs i see endless people walking the streets with a cv in hand try and rock up for a job but the opportunities are scarce during winter. Addstaff and Tradestaff are agencies in QT that have current employment opportunities so if you feel the need to contact them do so. Accomodation is not that hard to find with room and house shares a plenty so try the online download for Lakes Weekly Bulletin for all the vacancies going. Wanaka fills up pretty quick so be warned on that too. Hitchiking is a way of life here in NZ and not at all like the UK so dont be worried to get around. I give heaps of lifts during the season repaying back all the times ive needed a ride. If anyone feels the need for more advice I can be contacted on heathwakelin@hotmail.com. Good luck with your seasons and please leave your England shirts behind.
