Well, as the name implies, just a "hang it out there and see if anyone bites" thread.

[DUNX - I changed the name... now the official WB10 thread]

As the cost of flights + transfers is about £120(ish) through Easyjet + train, and Eurostar looks to be about £150+, wondered if anyone wanted to drive along!

Its 861 miles give or take to Tignes, in my tiddy little corsa, thats 3 full tanks and a bit (Driving easily) which is £130.

If we allow for a bigger car / van and say £180, if we can get 5 people... £180/5 = £36.

Stick on another bit for Ferries/Eurostar and food, cost of insurance etc and call it £50 straight to the door!

So, £100 all in, which yes, come close to the price of Easyjet, but it means no paying for Taxi transfers or train hopping.

All we need is a car and 4 other people!

We can take my Corsa and a roof rack, but it'll be a squeeze Wink

Quickly looking at the cost of a 7 seater APC (Wink) through Avis rental thats about £350 which pushes the cost for 7 people to about £120 both ways.

Well, anyone up for it?

Bear in mind we need a car and confirmed before we do this, otherwise, we'll need to book flights Novemberish latest....

Just a few other costs to think about.

Toll Roads. About 60 euros each way.

Snow chains. You're gonna need snow chains/snow tyres at that time of year at that altitude.

snow chains and good to have but onse you get off the resort side streets then teh snow us usually clear.

the two road trips to the alps ive done we only needed the snow chains for about 300 meters....though they fell off after about 50 meters so we just didnt bother for the other 250 metres!

road tripping is fun and if you book early...take the friday night ferrys and dont book the obvious P&O ferry you can get a good deal across the channel

You will seriously struggle to get 5/7 people into a car with that many seats and with snowboards and luggage too. Snow chains are essential, as is european roadside assistance.

I love the idea but I'd be too worried about a breakdown, that would just be a right pain in the butt Sad

yeah as charlie said you hae to figure in snowboard bags and other kit

if you have a 5 seater car you can only really fit 4 people in it...and if its a corsa maybe only 3!
its all well and good sayign we'll just squeeze in but you are driving for 12 hours or so and if your not comfortable it will be a nightmare journey

and european breakdown assistance is a must....me and charlie..and several other were stuck outside milan for several hours then stuck in milan for several more getting a vehical fixed at a rarther large cost!

Road tripping can be fun...if you are in a reliable car and plenty of breathing space and provisions incase of emergency.

but if you stick in the back of a cramped car then its not so good!

sounds interesting, me and my boyfriend would possibly be hiring boards at the resort anyways too... I guess there's also peoples locations to take in to consideration as well!

I drove out to L2A a few weeks back and it was quite good, it took about 12hrs door to door, cost wise was about £250 quid all in (excluding half a dozen cans of monster to keep going Very Happy), i used the tesco's vouchers for the eurotunnel so didnt have to pay for that Smile

i'd do it again for sure Smile

I've driven loads of time - in the back of the Soul Sports van 3 times, as a passenger twice, when I got thrown off the coach at Calais and had to hire a car to Laax and last Feb with the family. It's cheaper for a group, means you can travel when you want and takes as much sh1t as you can squeeze in your car. You can pretty much do it non-stop with one driver on empty French roads with a couple of fuel/wee stops.

My top tip... you can't fall asleep when you're chewing gum, but by bugger do your jaws ache when you get to Calais.

yeah, it worked out at about £130 petrol and about £120 in tolls. You can obviously avoid the tolls if you go the looooooong way but i couldnt be arsed.

I was driving a diesel, i get about 45-50mpg roughly Smile
