practice popping ollies without the kicker to start to get the technique right then progress to the kicker.
popping will give you more height to hold a grab and then start thinking abouty rotations.

practice varying your speed too.

rememmber you have to fall a few times to progress yourself and find your capabilitites Very Happy

You don't *have* to fall obviously. It's important to straight line the last 10m or so and to bend your legs before you hit the jump. That keeps your centre of gravity low, stops the kicker throwing you off balance and sets you up for that pop at the top once you're comfortable with the jump. If you think you're bending your knees enough, you're probably not. I mean really bend them. Also, keep that side-on riding position in the air and go for a grab that's comfortable. Then you can progress to styling that out, trying a few more grabs and then on to rotations.

P.S. I'm not very good at putting this in to practice myself and can't hep but do the same grab over and over.

but just riding off is also okay, and part of normal progression, especially on an unfamiliar kicker or hill..

some kickers have proper kick (whilst others are simple wedges) and for the unaware a pop on top of the transition may kick you higher than expected..so learn in stages..ride off small kickers and ollie on the ground until your happy to put the ollie on the kicker ... then do it all switch Very Happy

and then do Lien Airs like Dunx

Always had a thought on olleing off akicker.

On the flat if u ollie and Pop over forwards u havnt got far to go..same backwards if u get it wrong. But off a ramp u could end up nose down so be aware. I do more of an extension of both legs as u hitn the tranny and then the energy of it going up is not absorbed more connected etc.

On the flip side if u bend your needs as u go over u absorb it and can do safe jump etc...

Shifty not the easiest trick? Kick back leg forwards a bit?

not really, if you dont counter rotate the shoulders when you kick the back leg you could end up in all sorts of pain Shocked

As dunx said, grabs are the best as they bring you down to the board and keep you all tidy in the air Smile Methods a good one Cool

Crappy stalefish grabs are easy. Indys, Melon, Method, people used to call those easy boned methods 'palm air' didnt they. They're quite satisfying if you can nail one of those.

there is 3 ways of getting air off of a kicker or roller- coasting, popping and ollying. coasting is just riding off of something with a centred stance (or sometimes back depending on the tranny), popping involves extending both legs as you ride up the kicker/pipe etc which preloads the board and pops you into the air. ollying is actively pulling the board up underneath you and usually gives you most height. however it is less controlled and you may put your body out of alignment when ollying hard. also, you will be going off the jump on your own 'terms' rather than the trajectory of the jump itself.

Nice advice.
I always wondered why my balance seemed difficult to control, and also why I stacked it when landing, but thinking about it now getting low to the board would help sort that Very Happy
I need to practice those jumps more!

Had my 2nd go at the kickers at Chill Factore last week. Thing I found I was doing wrong is popping my ollie to late (trying to jump when already in mid-air doesn't work!). Once I'd got the timing sorted, I just needed to be a bit more brave and carry more speed. First time you properly clear the knuckle feels sweet!!!! Thumbs Up

I still find that everything seems to go so fast that my brain hasn't the time to do anything! I want to at least manage the grab, hopefully practising at Hemel on fridays will help and some friendly advice from scuk members down there Smile
