there is a bowling alley almost complete at ssv now. right next to the nursery slope.
theres a write up in the sheffield paper about ssv not getting permission to make the enhancements to the slope they wanted to. |

I'm a serious boarder of only 1 year, and learned about 3 years ago at Cas. Halifax slope used to be practically on my doorstep, tho this was before I started boarding, and have since moved further west towards Manchester. This results in Chill FactorE and Fax being about the same amount of time away by car in good weather, due to the M60. The cost of riding is about the same, maybe slightly cheaper at CFe. The one time I've been to Fax it was really quiet BUT was having a really hard time adapting to snowflex and came home covered in bruises and never seemed to get the hang of riding it throughout the session. This and the fact that the dendix on the lift could wreck the base of my new board (prized possesion ) means I only ride at CFe now. (and the local fields this week )
To make me go to Fax, reduce the prices severely, remat it (snowflex had turned brown) and yeah, hold a freestyle night weekly where there's coaches who will give you tips. If so, i'd love to be a part of the local scene. Chill Factore is just too full of newbie skiers.
Better yet..build a fridge over the slope in Halifax! |

Wow, I'd never have known this from when we went there that one time and it was practically deserted. The rails and stuff lying at the side of the slope looked pretty good actually, but looked like they were lying there forgotten. Anyways I'm permamently scarred from my failings at riding the snowflex so it's gonna take me some convincing and some asspadz to make me go back there. |

I think Stevie's point is spot on.
Snowflex is great for riders in terms of progression, but it does remove the need the for sessions.
Surely anyone who wants to learn spins etc. will go to a snowflex slope. And if you can do this at any time, then what is the point of going to a freestyle session if the only extras are the rails (if you have a snowdome nearby then surely if you want to go somewhere that pretty much specialises in jibbing). |

| Personally I think Gloucester is great. It has snowflex park and dendix slopes and if you hit the righ times it is quiet and on friday nights they have freestyle with coaching by an ex pro (not quite my bag yet though) . For me i try and get there weekly and so think its great as i cant afford to hit tamworth or snow on a weekly basis!! |

I'm gonna go along with with all the points people have made about affordability and location.
I've started riding Dendix twice a week now. It's certainly not dead in the North East! I have two slopes within 10miles of me. And they both run freestyle sessions once a week for under a £10er! It's either that or I drive 90miles and pay £30 for the freestyle session at Cas.
Maybe those of you who said their local slopes don't run a freestyle night should have a word with the managers. See if they will put up a poster and do a cheap deal on one of their quieter nights? Everybody wins!
Sunderland on a Monday has been pretty busy recently and Whickham in Gateshead is only a tiny slope but they have a decent little quarter pipe! You learn things like that faster on a dry slope - cos it hurts more when you stuff things up!
Until there is a snowdome in every county there will always be a need for dry slopes. |

| I'd quite like to stick up for dry slopes, though I've only just started going to my local one again. I learnt at Norwich back in 95, and have spells of going every week, then not going at all. As far as I can tell the club seems to be going ok - recent extensions to the slope and club house. A year or so ago I can remember it being jam packed on Mon and Thurs nights for freestyle nights, but I've recently started going on Mondays again and it seems a bit quieter. I hope it does continue to thrive - the Farmers Jam each year certainly shows there's still interest, and with the Brit Snow Tour visiting over the last few years it certainly seems to be doing alright, and I hope it'll continue to do so. I do fear that it may suffer as more indoor places open up, namely Hemel and Snoasis, but we'll see! |
