Maverix at Castleford Saturday 17th January was an awesome day. This is my third Maverix camp the last two being at Milton Keynes, as always Jay delivered a professional and thoroughly fun day of freestyle coaching.
Having mainly ever ridden at MK, and only occasionally at Cas, I was very impressed by the quality of the freestyle features on offer. Although the slope is not as exciting to ride as MK the layout allows the features to be well placed and the long blue box is a real treat to ride. Having a dedicated rookie section with a low flat box and low 3” wide rail completely closed off by a low ice wall from the rest of the slope was also a very good idea allowing progression to take place without the fear of interference or interfering with other slope users. Personally I felt the two rails could have been just a little wider apart, but that is a minor gripe.
The day followed the usual Maverix structure with the party being split into two smaller groups based on level of freestyle experience. Each group of six people had its own dedicated coach, each full of suggestions to improve your riding technique or style as well as pushing you to do new tricks.
The day started for me and my ten year old daughter with a briefing about slope and park etiquette and safety and then Front side side 360’s over the kicker. The other group started in the rookie section working on rails. Unlike Milton Keynes we were able to session the long box at the end of the slope as well as hitting the kicker; this was due to having the luck of a fairly quiet slope. Both sessions were videoed and the footage reviewed before the next run. This allowed you to see how unstylish you really looked (Lol  ) and what you needed to improve on your next run. The focus then switched for our group onto the rails, including a two foot high flat bar at the top of the slope. We worked on spins onto the rails as well as off, and various style based techniques on the rail, including back side tail slides, front side board slides. The over group worked on straight airs and grabs over the kicker.
The day finally wound down with a warm down and stretching session and another opportunity to review video footage with coaching analysis.
In summary Maverix is probably the biggest thing to happen in British snowboarding since the first indoor snow park. 
The fact that all levels of ability and ages are being coached is fantastic, also the level development for the youngsters is incredible with dedicated progressive coaching moving the future of British snowboarding forward.
I would thoroughly recommend anybody to try a session with Maverix, and would happily recommend them to either Milton Keynes or Castleford as both a great. Both my daughter and I will also attend the ‘One Trick Pony’ sessions at MK this month. Well done Jay keep it going!  |

Seconded.
The set up was second to none, as well as the coaching. This is my 2nd course and each time my riding / confidence has benifited. While not yet being a freestyle warrior ( ) I now feel my general freestyle riding has improved each day i have done.
I supose the biggest thing Ive found change is my whole perception of how to approach learning a new trick.
Keep up the good work, and bring some of them one trick ponys to cas |

Cant wait to get on the tam park to try out my newly aquired spins onto the box
Maverix really does do what it says on the tin and i'm too impatient to learn this stuff myself  |

| Good review, been thinking of doing one of these soon. Do you need at least some freestyle experience, or can I go on one without having done any at all? |

Being able to a static ollie is an advantage, and possible having hit a rail 50/50 would be good. However both can be picked up pretty quick, and Jay can have you board sliding and popping of kickers before you know it. |
